The elevator and Nature Trail to the summit
@contesstant , that first one in your first post is awesome...there is something surreal about it.
Okay, I gotta ask. Elevator?
I am going on my annual "larch weekend" hiking trip (just to the NE Cascades to hike while the larches are turning) this weekend. Our new dog is not trail ready yet so my husband is staying home on dog duty so I can go. Aww...
I did a little hike near Lake Placid this morning before heading south. Only thin clouds so it was bright enough for nice colors. There is a little hill called Owl's Head just south of Cascade Lakes that has great views after a 15 min hike up. Quite a change heading back to I-87 compared to a week ago when I drove north.@marzNC As you know Hurricane Joachin is making its way up the east coast so not sure where you will be in your journey back down south in relation to it. Here in CT its rainy and chilly. Drive safe and be careful and all of that stuff.
The history of the NY Adirondack Park is pretty fascinating. The elevator near the top of Whiteface was built in the 1930s, after the toll road was constructed. Franklin Roosevelt was Governor of NY when the toll road finally was approved and construction started. He was President by the time the toll road was dedicated. In his dedication speech, he mentioned it would be nice to have an elevator for those who couldn't make the walk from the end of the road to the summit. The elevator was completed few years later. It's pretty amazing. There is a 424 ft tunnel carved into the granite to get to the elevator. The elevator holds about a dozen people and is 276 ft (about 27 stories).Okay, I gotta ask. Elevator?
