Why do you ski?

I ski because it's the closest I can come to flying without alcohol or drugs.

I ski because it gets me outside in the winter when I might not be motivated to go outdoors.

I ski because I can continually challenge myself to do better, and for the feeling of accomplishment I get when I do something new.

Mostly, however, I ski because it's fun!

That's like asking why I breathe!

I grew up skiing! It is part of my life. I have been doing it since I was five years old. I do not know what I would do if I couldn't ski.

I agree with the reasons Diva posted though, they are great reasons.

Just found this thread, so I thought I'd add my two cents:

I ski because it's so much fun!

I ski because it's something my husband and I can do together!

I ski because I love standing on a mountain and looking out.

YOU HANG GLIDE, Lil? I've always wondered who did that. Saw a couple at the top of Ascutney this weekend. Now THAT takes nerve.

Skiing is as close to flying as I'M going to get!!!!

I fly tamdem once a year. My husband is the real pilot. we own 2 gliders and a house in NY just so we can hang glide. Lola and Phil have tried it too. My granddaughter took lessons this summer at Kitty Hawk and hopes to continue in Alaska.

We would be happy to show you the way to lessons at Morningside flight park near Ascutney.

Thanks, but I think I'll pass. I'm afraid it's not for me (though I do like to watch).

I ski because I'm afraid of heights.

Wait... that doesn't make sense.

I guess I ski because I feel at home in the mountains and it is something fun that my husband and I discovered together.

Skiing is thrilling. The wind rushes by. You feel free and alive. Snow is beautiful.

OR, my husband's reply:

"I like to suffer in the cold. If I want to suffer in the heat, I go golfing."

Like skidiva, one reason I ski is to get myself out and exercising in the winter. Not to mention that its really fun!

Skiing is fun and exciting - and it is a family activity. I really enjoy skiiing with my boys.

I ski because it's white, and silent, and cold, and I can be one with the mountain. I ski because my body likes swooping about, my quads yearn for the burn, and I love the end-of-day exhaustion. I ski because I get to take chances, experience wonder and awe and fear and excitement and humiliation and pride.

I ski because it makes me feel young again.

You really capture the essence of skiing liquidfeet. I could imagine myself skiing while reading your post. Beautiful!

Hi Liquidfeet! My local ski areas are Whitetail and Ski Liberty - both in PA. They are about 1 1/2 hours away and are not very big - but they are better than nothing. We have had horrible weather in the Mid-Atlantic the past two years, so I haven't been able to ski there much. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a nice cold and snowy winter here this year!

Outside of what's already been posted, all of which are true for me, skiing clears my head. I totally forget all the other problems. Best distraction in the world. It's me and the mountain. The rest of life's issues are definitely on the back burner when I'm out there making turns.

You all have said so many true things about skiing--ditto all of the above.

I ski because I can.
Let me explain. My brother died of prostate cancer a few years ago at the age of 53. He really really really really really didn't want to die. He had so many plans--he was a long distance runner, a vegetarian, the funniest person I have ever known, incredibly intelligent and creative and well-read, and the kindest person in my entire family (don't get me started on them...). He didn't get to do things he wanted to before he died. So I ski because I can. For all the other things you all said, too. But I ski for George.

I miss him.
