Why do you ski?

I ski because I can.
But I ski for George.
I miss him.

I think YOU have the best reasons of all! :grouphug: Thank you for sharing this.

I ski because I love the sense of freedom, I love that it makes me live in the moment, I love the smell of the snow and trees, I love that it challenges me to move outside my comfort zone.

I just love to ski.:ski2:

Yup. I echo many of the above sentiments.

However to consolidate :

I ski because is is fun.
I ski because it's an activity DH and I can do together (at similar levels)
I ski because it lets me meet new friends (courtesy of theSkiDiva)
I ski because it's an activity at which I can still advance my skills at 33 or at 53. My favorite physical activities (passions) from when I was younger were ballet and gymnastics. I miss the ballet dearly but I'm at a point my life (for a bit now) where my body is no longer capable of performing the dance stuff at the high level to which I was accustomed so it is pure frustration for me. With skiing there are so many new things to try/learn/perfect and nothing physical to hold me back.

Interesting thread. Early season half, people skied for entirely different reasons than are posted in today's half!

Today people are posting my answer!

I know what got me started, and I know I didn't like it and couldn't wait for it to be over. I didn't have a clue why I was excited for ski season to start up again the following season. The question here, and the answers posted got me thinking -- and it's the same reason I used to weight lift, do aerobics classes, etc. And why I bike in the off-season.

I have always found that when I am skiing, or riding my bike, or whatever physical activity I might choose, I seem to be UNABLE to do or think about anything else at the same time.

It seems like I'm always doing twelve things at once, or getting ready to do the next thing as I'm doing the thing I'm in the middle of, y'know?

It is so cool to be so in the moment!

Dunno which day this was, and am surprised that I had the picture in my phone -- no reception up there so I am never carrying it in a pocket, but I'm glad I found this, even if it's not the best of quality!

Me too, skiing clears my head!
I love being outside in the mountains filling my lungs with fresh mountain air. Not sure, but I think I would suffer from light deprivation if I could not get above the clouds in the winter.

Thank you, Native Vail Gal--
I am much closer to him on the hill--in many ways. He loved the mountains.
One of these days, NVG, I will make my way to your part of the country--I'm jealous I can't make Abasin day this year--but WILL BE THERE NEXT YEAR!

I ski for so many reasons.

I ski because it gives me freedom.
It all allows my brain to relax.
I love to feel the wind on my face.
And to challenge my body.
I ski because I can as well. My mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 35. She has been so much over the last 21 years and I have watched it destroy her poor body. I remember days growing up when she couldn't get off the sofa because of the pain, much less put a pair of ski boots on her mangled feet (which have now been surgically corrected) and make her knees do what they need to do on skis. I have a deep-seeded fear that I too will one day be diagnosed with the horrible disease and feel like I better take advantage of my ski years while I can just in case.

I ski for the thrill.
I ski because it's my winter form of psychotherapy (gardening is my summer form).

I ski because I love the outdoors and spending time with my family. The three of us ski together all the time (at least for now - soon we won't be able to keep up with our son!).

I love it. That's about it.

It's fun, and anything that truly is *fun* in my mind takes away all other thoughts.

I agree with most ladies here, it clears your mind, you stop rambling through all of the things you should be doing, could be doing, need to be doing... and just ski. That's it. THAT is pure fun.

Ski Spirit

Ski Diva Extraordinaire
I ski because my spirit feels totally free when I ski. It's like no other sport. There's a sense of beauty, serenity and harmony (even on bad days) to the movements and the landscape.

I also ski because I can and will continue to ski for as long as I possibly can. As someone else said, I would still be skiing at age 85 if I were physically able to.

I ski for my soul. I have had some of my most spiritual times, alone in the trees, on the lifts, on the mountain tops (the others have been in the desert).

I am so lucky and grateful for these moments. And raising my children in the mountains (and desert), has definitely influenced them. (My oldest lived at Brighton for a season and worked there for 6 years. My youngest is a ski lift construction worker and year-round lift ops there, and is heading to the Moab outback next week and my middle boy is loving his life in Jackson, WY).

And the friends I have met over the years because of skiing! An instant connection, because if you are a ski addict, you connect with others like you.

Skiing is better than sex---it lasts longer and gives you an excuse to buy gear and stuff.

I've been thinking about this one, and I really don't have anything earth-shattering. It's very simple. Skiing makes me feel good.
