Study finds fruity alcoholic drinks healthy!

This is too much!

On CNN:

A fruity cocktail may not only be fun to drink but may count as health food, U.S. and Thai researchers say.

Adding ethanol -- the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila and other spirits -- boosted the antioxidant nutrients in strawberries and blackberries, the researchers found.

Any colored fruit might be made even more healthful with the addition of a splash of alcohol, they report in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Do cocktail umbrellas enhance the effects? :D

That's so funny ... I make a grapefruit martini that I always justify by claiming its health benefits. I mean, grapefruit juice is healthy, right??

(By the way, I usually wing it, but it's approx 1 part citrus vodka to 2 parts grapefruit juice and a little simple syrup or sugar, shake with ice, strain into a cocktail glass rimmed with fine sugar. Mmmmmm.)

(But be careful ... certain medications can be affected by grapefruit juice. I don't know which ones, but I've heard this is the case.)

Ooooops, I haven't checked in in awhile. Limejuice, freshly squeezed that is, is critical to the margarita! (Lime = good.) ANd summer always starts with a gin and tonic (with lime).

lol, reminds me of how people justify eating candy by quoting the studies that say dark chocolate has health benefits!

Are you kidding? I totally justify my love for dark chocolate by this fact!

And now, I have reason for my fruity martinis!!!

And, just to throw in one of my favorites, and Apple-Tini with a Vanilla Twist:

1 part Sour Apple Pucker
1 part Vanilla Smirnoff or Absolute Vanilla
1 part Midori Melon

Shake in a martini shaker, pour in sugar rimmed glass and garnish with a green or red apple slice. MMMMMMMM.

I think it was either birth control pills or anti depressants LOL I guess you'd want to know if you're taking either of those.

Cholesterol Meds, specifically statins. Which DH is on. So we asked FIL about this, as he is a cardiologist, and DH LOVES grapefruit juice. Apparently you would have to drink like a quart a day to show any real effect, but the warnings err on the side of caution. So occasional consumption = OK, just don't drink a bunch every day.

Grapefruit juice is also verboten with certain high blood pressure medications. In fact, many of them. Lisinopril is one of which I'm aware. No grapefruits, ever.

In honor of this study, I had a fresh strawberry margarita tonight when we went out for dinner. :D

MMMMMMMM.

That sounds good. I'll put that in the recipe file for apres ski events at the '09 Diva Summit. :D

Ah, I was sick all last week--guess I wasn't have a daily fruity cocktail. Tsk, tsk! Next time I'm sick, instead of orange juice for breakfast, I'll whip up a few screwdrivers to fully benefit:smile:

Didn't we all get through college telling ourselves that alcohol kills germs--or was that just me? Haha!

I've been really into pomegranite cocktails lately--just add a little pom juice to anything!

Good to know! Due to an wheat allergy, I can't drink beer. So for me it's usually a fruity cocktail anyway.
