What wildlife do you see on the slope?

a moose cow and her calf under the small double chair at The Canyons in PC Utah. Another calf near the same chair.

Red-tailed hawk at Snowbird.

Fox at Sunday River

Chocolate lab at the top of the Sugarloaf lift at Alta (assuming a training session as she was also outfitted in a harness and red backpack!)

Pokey Porky Phil at Solitude, Jan 26, 2008

Day: Chocolate Day, Solitude, Utah, Jan 26, 2008.

Place: Round House, mid-mountain.

Time/Temp: EARLY, first lift ride, sub or around ZERO degrees Farenheight.

Circumstances: As Mountain Host, we get assigned various duties. Mine was to set up the tent at mid-mountain for the Sweet Candy orange/raspberry sticks and CHOCOLATE CINNAMON BEARS (which at subzero temps don't have that chewy quality---they tend to break the teeth).

Problem: I got the tables/chairs set up. I needed a garbage can. One was on the deck. Check. Went to get it---problemo. Kind of hard to move, some fur (as it turns out QUILLS) inside.

Solution: Get the cute guys opening up the round house to help me. It involved kicking the can (over on its side) and a broom (beating the sides).

What a rude awakening. Phil was snoozing and was NOT into waking up and leaving his warm garbage can cocoon (I can so totally relate Phil boy).

Well, after we rolled the can around and beat the sides, he finally ambled off to a nearby tree. But I could not help but feel for old Phil, as the can was probably pretty cozy in subzero temps---and maybe a few scraps for a midnight snack to boot.

I've seen porcupines at Alta, including one that was cruising around outside Alf's at lunchtime one day. At Steamboat this year I saw what I think was a mouse scrambling up the slope I was skiing down.

I missed the moose some of the rest of my group saw at The Canyons but saw their picture of it, just standing in the middle of the run.

And birds and squirrels, of course.

I'm catching up on this thread.

I also saw a porcupine outside Alf's at Alta one day two years ago during lunch. More recently (Feb of this year), I saw a cow moose walking alongside a trail at the Canyons below the Golden Eagle lift. I also saw a brown bear at Squaw Valley quite a few years ago. Ski patrol was warning people to stay clear of the area where the bear was. But, I think that the warning was actually making more people go in that direction to get a look at it. I also saw something that looked like a white ferret at Heavenly Valley on one snowy day. It was so cute!

I skied up on a grouse a couple weeks ago. Although I never saw it, I heard it. That noise never fails to get me, no matter how often I've heard it, it still scares me. Anyone else still freak on this sound?

This weekend at Okemo, my 9-yr old daughter had 2 deer cross the trail about 10 feet ahead of her. Luckily, she stopped quickly, but boy, was she freaked out!!! She definitely won't forget that run for a long time!
