First Hand Account of an Avalanche

Well, speaking of all this...there was just ANOTHER avy up here that caught a skier. He was 24 and traveling in a party of 8. Amazing how these accidents can be predictable like that. Luckily for him the beacon search begain immediately and even though he was buried for 40 minutes and unconscious when they dug him out, he was revived and survived the ordeal. There was a mountain rescue team and a search dog team about three miles away looking for the body of last week's victim, so it was about the best possible time to get caught by an avalanche. He was actually found and dug out by people on scene though. Reportedly there were 25 people conducting the beacon search within a few minutes. Lucky guy!

Edited to add: The local resort has had tons of in bounds avys lately. Most of them controlled, but HUGE - one has a 20 foot crown. Everything ripped huge when patrollers bombed. There is also a natural avy on the lower mountain. It didn't involve any skiers luckily.
