This has been a bad season for avalanches, so far, both inbounds and out of bounds.

Anyone have any tips of what we can do to be more avalanche aware, or to protect ourselves from becoming an avalanche victim? Gear advice?

I think the most important equipment anyone can have is advanced training. All the beepers and probes in the world are going to be useless if you don't have the knowledge, training and practice to use them.

Here is a good start on where to find training:

Check your local avalanche forecast daily to stay familiar with what's going on with the snowpack. Knowing the history and potential weaknesses in the snowpack BEFORE a storm greatly increases your decision-making ability. Links to most North American avalanche centers can be found here.
