Alternatives to custom orthotics?

So I picked up a pair of the "blue" SuperFeet yesterday (I have pretty much no arch, and the other colors all say they're for medium to high arch). The first thing I noticed is that the arch on these is set much higher than my old custom orthotics (but do those settl down at all over time? I don't know, it's been so long since I got them).

the jury's still out, but I did notice when walking home last night (it's about a half mile from the subway to my apartment), that my ankle, which I rolled back in October while hiking, wasn't bothering me. It's been pretty much on and off discomfort since I hurt it, so I was happy about that. Today, I have them in backpacking boots and we'll see how they feel.

Again, since my insurance covers absolutely ZERO and I really can't afford to throw down several hundred dollars right now, I'm definitely willing to give these a full shot. I'll try some treadmill running sometime this week as well, I think.
