Not ready for the season to be over; withdrawals starting

I made it through my first weekend not skiing. I am sad when anyone gets depressed but its such great comfort I am not alone. I tried to keep busy this weekend. Bought a new to me pair of skis, gambled a little at the casino and won, had a nice dinner with some friends last night, brunch in the backyard this am with my neighbor, a fun hockey game this afternoon and then a nice bike ride tonight. I am dreading next weekend when we take the ski stuff to storage but kinda glad we'll have space in the living room again. Farmers market starts in 4 weeks so looking forward to that. I want to enjoy the farmers markets and the summer stuff but I have the focal date of the end of august in mind as that's when football games start up and the countdown to fall and all the awesomeness after that begins. Looking forward to our trip to Vegas, Flagstaff and southern california at the end of May.

Conditions still are very nice at Sugarloaf. Even a light dusting last night, frosty vegetation above 2500 ft. Didn't soften at elevation until after 11, only (only?) got to low 50's at base, cooler than last weekend.

Alas -- there is substantial rain headed this way starting tomorrow evening, including coastal flood warnings. That will certainly put a dent in it.

A week ago, I had plan to ski till May so I wasn't sad at all. But by Wednesday this week, it's in the 70's and sunny, so was the forecast for the weekend. Our bike club is doing a "Tuch Tuneup" weekend that I just can't refuse, not with the kind of perfect riding forecast. So I dragged my bike out of the corner of the garage and made sure it was in working order.

Now, after 100 miles in perfect weather and ideal company on 2 wheels, I just couldn't imagine any more skiing going forward. I still have a standing invitation to visit a skiing friend I haven't seen for a year. But the 6 hr drive vs jumping on my bike right out of my door really is no competition.

I suspect my skiing season is done. And I don't even have time to feel sad about it before biking completely take over my life over a 48 hr period, and for the next 6 months!

It's snowing in Breck. Sigh. Maybe there will be some accumulation for Employee Day tomorrow ... at least someone will get to enjoy it!

Yes, if Breck and/or Vail would stay open for 2 more weeks, we'd consider driving out. But of course that's not going to happen. I like A-Basin, but not enough to try to talk DH into the drive to CO.

Our only hope is that Mammoth get another decent storm. We were lucky enough to be there recently for a dump of 18-24", probably the best storm of this very dry season. There is precip in next week's forecast, but we can't be sure if it will be white or wet.

Snow could convince us to head up. Rain at this point could really hurt the remaining base. Of course, I am hoping for snow to extend our season. I am not ready for the long hot summer, which will just be a continuation of the weather we've had all winter.

Glad you found your helping hand to get over winter's ending sadness. I need to join a bike club I think.

Great day at Wachusset today. Fun place, today was my first day there. Loved the wraparound deck with adirondack chairs everywhere, how the demo shop was attached to the lodge but with the back door closest to the chairs so you can get out there/back with skis and how all trails fed to the small main area. I'd love to give this place a go next season, wondering how crazy it gets crowd wise on a weekend? Today might be my last day. Mount snow closes next weekend but I have stuff to do the next 2 weekends. There's killington the first weekend of may but maybe its time to give my feetskis a rest and get pedicures again.

Wachusett gets a little overwhelming on weekends during the season with the crowds. I put up with it since it's only 40min from my house...so it's a easy get up & go, although still try to get there as early as possible. Hitting Wachusett during the week is always your best bet. Its a great family ski place. I love Mt Snow (it's 2 hrs from me). Sometimes on the weekends, I feel the longer drive is well worth avoiding the long lift lines/crowded lodge at Wachusett. We were just there yesterday to close out the season; so bittersweet! A fantastic day Spring skiing, but so sad to know it was our last.

So sorry to hear this @Jilly - and after we had such a nice lunch. End of season is always a downer for me too.

Couple of things I learned today: Don't text while on lift without putting glasses on. Messages may require some deciphering - luckily Jilly figured out what I was trying to write. Also I learned that wine at lunch does not improve my ski performance!

Just a little melancholy, that's all. I could not believe the number of road bikes that were out. Maybe I need a new summer sport!

Yes - stuck on tax, means stuck on the TGV! Since I need glasses to operate my phone, I totally understand. And I'll post that picture from lunch later.

I started biking when I tore my MCL skiing some years back!

Since then, cycling had been far more important than skiing (there's a few years of gap here and there in my skiing, but none in cycling). I even felt sad in fall when I had to put the bike away some years. Though since I started skiing in earnest again, I really never felt sad at the end of either season.

Only excitement of the new activity.

@snow addict - Wait, what? I need details, please!
Ha! Every year around this time local farmers bring their cows so that they could fight (well, they actually just push) each other. Cows are paired and a few pairs are brought to the ring and their handlers will try to get them engaged (this alone is quite funny as cows half of the time show very little interest), until only one cow remains - the one that held its ground the longest. According to some old tradition the winner of the event is entitled to the best pastures during summer. There are normally tents set up that sell wine, beers, racklette and hot dogs and event attracts quite bit crowds both from resort above and from the valley. It's this time of the year when most people would rather do something like this than ski.

I think we need a new event - cow pond skimming.

Well looks like pond skimming will be cancelled this season, heavy rain/snow is forecast for the weekend. Weather just don't want to cooperate. Fingers crossed it's not the sign of how things pan out this summer.

Pond skimming was cancelled at Mammoth, because there was not adequate snow to create a pond.

First time I can recall that happening, and hopefully the last.

Well, it IS tax season so not a totally inappropriate comment!

I expect yesterday was IT for this season (though you never know). Despite frigid temps, it was a good season. I didn't expect to make it, but hit 50 days of downhill. Add to that some 33 x-c days and I'm over 80 on snow this season. Very pleased about that.

Went to Loveland today. They have had over 30 inches since the 15th and the skiing was wonderful! Hit a few places almost knee deep.Only place I hit any ice was in the bottom of some moguls.
Thinking of hitting Winterpark tomorrow. Getting in as much as I can before I sadly (and happily) return home to Missouri later next week. It has been a wonderful winter here in Co. and already making plans to come back next season! I have about 75 days on hill, well over a million vert. Ft. and over 1200 miles skied. LOL, I'm tired. Hating to see it end but looking foreword to summer on the lake in Mo. Bummer is in 5 months didn't meet not one Diva. Maybe next season.

Yes, they were open today!!
Yeah, we could have skied but when we woke up and heard the wind, and then thought about the incoming rain, and then evaluated how warm and cozy the bed was we decided to stay where we were for a while. Once we got on the road to Montreal it rained and rained and rained.
