Intro to backcountry in the Northeast

Crisis averted.. I originally emailed the @shejumps one for Jaimee, but then on a different page she also had a gmail one listed. So when I went back to my outbox I thought I had made up the @shejumps address from thin air. Glad I didn't actually somehow mess that up so badly! Lol
They have an error on the page - they omitted the j in @shejumps. I got a bounce too - I corrected it and forwarded it along.

Ugh, they posted again saying it was full and to email for waitlist..

So assuming if we haven't heard anything then we didn't make it in? :(

I wonder if they put you on the wait list automatically if you didn't get a spot.

That seems like the fairest thing to do, but I emailed again with the separate subject line that specified waitlist like they said just in case. Would be awesome if they let you know if you were in or out. I'm kind of surprised it filled so fast in the middle of a Tuesday, but I guess that's social media for ya..

Okay, so emails have not been sent yet. They just said over the next few days they will go through and then email to tell you if you are in or on the waitlist. Hope is still alive!

I can't believe there isn't a better process to let 10 people know they are in, but maybe they get THAT inundated with emails..

Now I got an email for both my initial email and the waitlist one both saying thanks for your email and we'll be in touch with more details soon. Did you guys get this??

I'm hopefully optimistic that this means a yes on being in, but not sure if it was just a blanket to every email.

I got one from my initial email saying that they'd be in touch with more information...not sure what to make of it.

If we didn't make the cut, we should plan a hike anyways.

Here - I don’t know much about east coast touring but my husband does mount Washington regularly to ski Tuckermans specifically when spring conditions are in. I have a friend who also ski tours so I just assumed I’d go with one of them. I did an AIARE level 1 out in the cascades. They offer AIARE level 1 in NH somewhere - that’s where I’d start! But Listening in to the conversation here -

That is what I got as well. Hike sounds good.

@MissySki @elemmac @lisamamot - if you can't get in is there anyway you three and/or others could make your own group with Amc-NH - seems like they offer similar programs on their website - perhaps you could make your own Diva group?

Not sure. I’ve browsed their offerings in the past, but never looked into anything in depth. Didn’t know you could create your own group...I’ll have to look into this more.

I can't remember if I mentioned this somewhere already, but Mt. Ascutney near Windsor, VT has backcountry skiing both on the old ski trails and in the trees. The ski trails are mown and hand-cut to keep them open. The lower level of the lodge is always open with access to restroom and changing area. Head to the Brownsville Butcher and Pantry afterward for outstanding beer and incredible food.

Info and map can be found here. For current conditions, go to the "Ascutney Trails" Facebook page and ask. The local backcountry terrain guru is up there all the time and can provide detailed conditions. It's a good place to find people to play with as well.

There's also xc skiing, fatbiking, and snowshoeing on the MTB trail network.

There are a bunch of Ascutney FB pages, so the one I'm referring to looks like this:

Hi @SnowSeeker! I have not attended the festival, but I am sure it is well-worth going.

Another place to gain new skills is the Appalachian Mountain Club. I'm a member of the Boston chapter ski committee, and we run a backcountry workshop, which is at Pinkham Notch this year. (I used to teach at the workshop.) Other chapters also run different backcountry workshops (specifically New Hampshire). (The club is organized into regional chapters, but all the trips are listed together on the main website Ourdoors.org.) The NH chapter in particular has a lot of BC trips. More info here: https://activities.outdoors.org/search/?act=18 You do not need to be a member to attend.

I WAS a member of the BCTNE Facebook group, but quit after getting into it with some members over revealing stashes. I was probably too strident, but I did find it to be a bit of a sausage fest. YMMV. Definitely don't take my experience as any dis on the group--they may have changed since I quit--the guy who runs the site was very cool. I'd just had enough.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your input on BCTNE. I did join and I’ve had to unfollow for a bit. You are correct that it’s high testosterone...
