Hiking Clubs

Does anyone know of a great hiking club in CT/NY/NJ area? I'm in Greenwich, CT. I found some information on a club based out of NYC called Wild Earth Adventures. It seems well organized but they charge $60 for every day trip which seems a bit pricey. Heck, my summer sports are *supposed* to be less expensive so that I can spend it all during the winter/spring on skiing!

I don't have experience with any of them, but you can generally get a good feel for a group by looking around the past events and seeing how many people showed up.

Sorry for not looking here for such a long time.

I can't believe outfits would have the nerve to charge an arm and a leg for hiking trips. $60 per trip? What do they offer? Gold plated hiking boots? Or do they smooth the trail with bulldozers?

The largest & best hiking club in the entire northeast, bar none, is the Appalachian Mountain Club.

More popularly known as the AMC, it has chapters all over the northeast. The closest to you are the NY/NJ and CT chapter. Here's their individual website:

Club dues per YEAR is about $50 with no or very low per trip fee ($2?). The CT chapter also runs a e-mail list for last minute trips. Probably the most popular hiking destination by you are Pound Ridge.

The AMC offers more than just hiking. They have cabins and lodges all over the northeast too. And kayak/canoe trips and bike trips. Though hiking is the core of AMC's existance.

Even better part? They do ski trips in the winter too.
