I am not talking your favorite runs in general. . . but the runs you associate with your best moments this season. Maybe because the sun was shining and the snow was soft and you couldn't stop doing lap after lap. Maybe because you were skiing with a friend who's an absolute blast on the hill. Maybe because you had a breakthrough on this particular patch of land.
Where? And why?
So far this season I would have to say:
1. Baby Ruth at Snowmass
Because we were skiing with a couple of guys who are true locals and amazing skiers. I *passed* on the previously offered chute (Possible) because I was being wimpy and couldn't really see in to know what I was getting into. (And it was a few days after a snow, and what I could see looked a little. . . hairy.) But then I thought, "What was I thinking?!" So when we skied up to Baby Ruth I didn't bother scoping things out. Just went for it. And skied it well and had a grand, old time.
2. Iron Mask in Copper Bowl, Copper Mountain
Because DH and I got two days to ski in Copper and be grown-ups while my mom watched the kids at her house. No dropping anyone at ski school. No getting called for more underwear because someone had an accident. No quitting early because the baby had been crying for an hour straight. Skiing like it *used to be,* with apres-ing and lying around in the jacuzzi for an hour before showering in peace and getting dressed for dinner. And skiing hard all day. The sun was out. The coverage was good. The snow was soft, soft, soft. And we got great exercise skiing/hiking the ridge out to Iron Mask/Schaefer's/Bradley's Plunge over and over again and just whooping and hollering and doing lap after lap.
3. Hornsilver, Blue Sky Basin, Vail
Because I skied alone for four hours in I don't know how long (I used to ski alone quite a bit). It was snowing and visibility was really poor, so I went to Hornsilver, where there are some little trees and decent visibility and just skied lap after lap (the singles line was REALLY working for me that day). It was quiet and peaceful and the wind was loading the falling snow on the slope and I felt really connected to myself, just working the small-to-medium soft bumps and feeling a rhythm and thinking mostly about how beautiful it was and how soft the snow felt under my skis. Moving meditation.
