Favorite runs of THIS season. .. and why

I am not talking your favorite runs in general. . . but the runs you associate with your best moments this season. Maybe because the sun was shining and the snow was soft and you couldn't stop doing lap after lap. Maybe because you were skiing with a friend who's an absolute blast on the hill. Maybe because you had a breakthrough on this particular patch of land.

Where? And why?

So far this season I would have to say:

1. Baby Ruth at Snowmass
Because we were skiing with a couple of guys who are true locals and amazing skiers. I *passed* on the previously offered chute (Possible) because I was being wimpy and couldn't really see in to know what I was getting into. (And it was a few days after a snow, and what I could see looked a little. . . hairy.) But then I thought, "What was I thinking?!" So when we skied up to Baby Ruth I didn't bother scoping things out. Just went for it. And skied it well and had a grand, old time.

2. Iron Mask in Copper Bowl, Copper Mountain
Because DH and I got two days to ski in Copper and be grown-ups while my mom watched the kids at her house. No dropping anyone at ski school. No getting called for more underwear because someone had an accident. No quitting early because the baby had been crying for an hour straight. Skiing like it *used to be,* with apres-ing and lying around in the jacuzzi for an hour before showering in peace and getting dressed for dinner. And skiing hard all day. The sun was out. The coverage was good. The snow was soft, soft, soft. And we got great exercise skiing/hiking the ridge out to Iron Mask/Schaefer's/Bradley's Plunge over and over again and just whooping and hollering and doing lap after lap.

3. Hornsilver, Blue Sky Basin, Vail
Because I skied alone for four hours in I don't know how long (I used to ski alone quite a bit). It was snowing and visibility was really poor, so I went to Hornsilver, where there are some little trees and decent visibility and just skied lap after lap (the singles line was REALLY working for me that day). It was quiet and peaceful and the wind was loading the falling snow on the slope and I felt really connected to myself, just working the small-to-medium soft bumps and feeling a rhythm and thinking mostly about how beautiful it was and how soft the snow felt under my skis. Moving meditation.

BX Express at Silverstar because I was with DH and DS at the end of a 6 day ski vacation and when I looked back up the run I said "wow ... I skied that without thinking about it one"... it was non-groomed after 18cm of snow and it rocked !

Just this past Sunday at Aspen.

Buckhorn: waist ++ deep unskied powder in a nice steep pitch with mid sized bumps under the freshies. I was bouncing from turn to turn...I felt like I could have been in an Aspen commercial or something. I really felt locked in & was skiing like a pro. It felt so good, I just hooted & hollered the whole way down. A woman in a ridiculous one-piece on the slope met me at the bottom of the pitch & said "my goodness you're just having a blast, aren't you?" "Hell yes I am, aren't you?!" Was all I could say. My sweetie followed my down with this big $hit eatin grin on his face and we just looked at each other like...wow. Great day all in all, but that run was sick.

On a normal day, Buckhorn is nothing to write home about. It's just a regular run. But Sunday...it was epic.

Ah memories...
mid-January, Sugarloaf.
From the summit to the base via GondiLine Extension.
Non-stop! Twice!
The extension has only recently reopened, due to recent snows.
Best day all season for me - a somewhat short one.
Great day, though - glad to have had it.

This year it was mid-January in Vail's back bowls. I believe the best run was Morningside in Sundown Bowl. We dropped in and got near untracked, knee to thigh deep turns all the way down. Smoking down Dragon's Teeth in knee deep was pretty close. I also have a thing for windbuff and loved arcing hugh turns down Forever on the most perfect windbuff I have ever seen.

Pretty sure it was in dense fog one day on Ptarmigan Bowl. Couldn't see worth a dang, but I knew that there was a smooth firm base underneath because they were preparing for the Doug Smith race and we'd had a foot of fresh powder on top of that. NO ONE was going down the Bowl due to the total whiteout conditions. I took three runs down, finally dragging a friend down with me because I wanted to share. I just trusted my feet and my memory of the slope and swept down through the fog and silky powder.

So Far...(remember....my season may just be starting...)

1) Avanti in Vail: On December 2, 2007 after our last wedding guests had left the Lodge to head back to Denver in the afternoon, my brand new husband (aka Mr. NVG!) and I took a late afternoon run as husband and wife! Beautiful Powder, sunny skies and perfect ski/life partner!

2) Outhouse in Winter Park: First time returning to Winter Park since my TBI in 2003! Wonderful friend and smooth powder....plus lovely blue skies! Conquered the mountain....and OUTHOUSE!!! :yahoo:

Nice Thread.....more to report very, very soon! :cheer:

Trestle at MaryJane. I've gone on it a few times before, but this is the first year that I really did it successfully!

Hey there Divas.

My best runs this season were at Okemo with the Women's Alpine Adventure AKA Waa Waa's. Skiing with women for three days, in rain, hail, sleet and snow the first day making room for perfect sunny
2nd and 3rd day. It's been a long time since I smiled so much while skiing and while working on my stance etc. My ex DBF was a super skier and it was not always nice to ski with him(that's a story for another thread).

There is just something to be said about bonding with other women on the mountain while doing a sport you love. I cannot wait for Waa Waa's 2009!!!

Alpine Bowl and Ladies Slalom at Alpine Meadows last week--because I have wanted to skis those runs for some time and I actually did it last week. A bit nervous at first but just fine and DH saw me do Alpine Bowl which he had been raving about for a long time!!!!!!! Happy, happy, happy about accomplishment!!!!!

Cirque Headwall @ Snowmass--the conditions were perfect, we dove off without a glance, had great company (all women!), and I skied the best I ever have. That run will stick with me for a long time......still grinning!

The bowls and chutes at Breck. Don't know the names or if they have any. I actually believe they may have been OB.
All I know is that a local said.........."Follow me" So John and I followed him!

Whoooo hooooo!

Hehe, that was a great run!

For those that don't know, she decided to follow my dad off into some soft stuff but the soft stuff started sooner than she thought. At that exact moment I yelled up to her because I knew on teh other side of the drop was some good size bumps and she'd told us she couldn't ski bumps for medical reasons. Just as I yell "Kelly" she goes into the soft stuff and went face forward into it. Once we knew she was okay we all had a good laugh about it!

Medical reasons......I'm trying to keep my neck and my head attached to my upper torso! :D Neck took quite a beating after my TBI. Had the neck surgery last year, but bumps still make me feel like a Human BobbleHead! Gotta build up the neck strength again! Know any good neck exercises?!?! :eyebrows:

a couple of my favorite runs this year:

Early January at Killington (of course) on Ramshead because it was very foggy, but the snow was so beautiful and soft I was practicing doing easy wide round carved turns, leaning way over. I couldn't see a thing but it didn't matter.

Last weekend doing Ovation and lower Superstar because I was being challenged and got some nice compliments.

(and of course other future runs this year)

anyone going to Killington this weekend, I'll be there.

That's just *begging* for an inappropriate response, especially with Mr. Eyebrows. :nono: :eyebrows: :becky:

If it wouldn't offend half the ladies on here (perhaps you, too, as I don't know you very well), I have a great YouTube video link I would post.

I have to add to this thread my run in boot-top-deep to drifted-thigh-deep down Iron Mask at Vail on March 14. :becky: :becky: :becky:

You've all seen the photo more than once, so I won't post it again.
