ADK is pretty big. Which part of it will you be?

I'm only familiar with the High Peak region (Lake Placid). Most hikes there are more in the 7-8 mile (round trip) range.

There're definitely shorter hikes though. I just don't remember too many of them off the top of my head.

One of the best short hike I remember is across the road (Rt 73) from Cascade Lake, Pitchoff Mountain. You get a close-up view of the two Cascade lakes. Best views in the whole of ADK, in my opinion. It's also very popular with kids (8+). There're lots of small cracks and boulders for them to climb up and under!

Avalanche Lake is another lovely short hike, starting from ADK Loj. Don't remember the exact milesage, probably more like 8 mile round trip though. It's quite flat so should be a lot easier than many of the other high peak region hikes.

well, Nick's Lake fits the description, though it's not really "out there" (which can be good or bad). The hiking trails are lovely, as is the lake itself...

Blue Mountain is another popular hike (though as the blog mentions, popularity can have it's issues)

This site has brief descriptions of many hikes in the ares...

newskier378 - are you going to be in a specific area or trying to plan a trip? A beautiful 3 mile hike would be Ausable Chasm (north of Lake Placid). If you are going to be near Old Forge, the Bald Mountain hike has great views. There are also some hikes from the Inlet area too - Black Bear Mountain, Rocky Mountain - only about 1 mile, but a great view.
