Recommendations for snow pants that don't make you feel fat?

Second Columbia -- those Bugaboos are great!

My own pet peeve is that women's pants often seem to go for a boot cut, so they flare on the boot. It's not a huge deal breaker if the rest fits, it's just that I'd prefer a slightly more tapered cut on the boot.

Why? The flare makes it so much easier to pull the pant leg over the boot. Not to mention more room for the battery pack if you have a boot heater.

(I should just admit right now that when I have a choice between practical skiwear and cute skiwear, I will choose practical every time.)

I'm 5'9' and in between a 10-12 and LOVE the Powder Bowl Patagonia pants. I now have four pairs in red, green, dark blue and the insulated epic blue.

Ooh. That's promising, maybe they changed the fit. I have 2 Pairs of them maybe 4-5 years old that I feel like I'm gonna blow a gasket when I bend over. Otherwise I like them.

I've always heard that Patagonia's fit is inconsistent, even from year to year on stuff that's ostensibly the same.

I think Patagonia is very consistent with sizing.. Always buy the same size. I have several patAgonia jackets, i.e. Goretex, shell, running jacket, down sweater, down coat, vest.

A little flare is good for these exact same reasons but sometimes there's just too much of it for me.

Roxy and Groovstar have been the only pants I've found with long enough legs.I know there are others but they aren't available here.

I think they try to shoot to fit a range between endurance athlete and average physique. I like the company but if it isn't stretchy, I can't wear it comfortably.

I have big hips and large legs, so I find the bootcut styles are usually too tight in the thighs for me. I bought a pair of the bugaboos, and while they fit well in the waist, they are so constricting around my thighs that I can't even bend over to attach the leashes to my boots (tele skier here). I found some softshell snowpants from Freecountry that have some stretch to them, but they are also bootcut and have the same tightness through the thighs, while I'm swimming in the waist. I even went up a bigger size to see if that would help, but the legs still seemed to be the same width. So I tolerate the Freecountry pants when I feel like it, and other days I just wear the Land's End Squall snowpants that make me feel like a marshmallow. I just found a site yesterday for snowmobile gear for women called Divas Outerwear, and they had a few bib styles (what are what I REALLY want!) in sizes XS through 5X. I ordered a pair of their "Lace" bibs, and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. Keeping my fingers crossed that they fit! I was also encouraged to see that they offer what looks like some serious tech, wind/waterproof, uninsulated tech-style pants and jackets as well. I'm going to see how the bibs fit, and if they fit well, I may spring for a set of the tech stuff as well, for back country pursuits!

I just got a pair of Burton society women's pants in black and I think they look great on me. I'm 5'4" and 170 (big in the hips and thighs). They are pretty long on me so I think they would be better for someone taller.

I've looked (online) at some snowmobiling clothing, but I never found women's stuff. Please let us (or at least me!) know how they turn out.

I just went through the trails and tribulations of finding new ski pants. I wanted fairly technical pants that fitted well at the waist and didn't leave a back gap! I didn't want to have to pull the velcro waist adjustments in too much as that then means the waist band bunches up. I ended up buying a pair of Obermeyer Andorra pants, cargo style which I was definitely looking for, in a purple'ish colour my favourite colour and on sale! And they run big as I went down a size which is always a good feeling!

My daughter loves the Land End ski bib and while they are out of stock now, I am going to see about getting myself a pair next season. I would love to eliminate another closure at the waist!

This may sound crazy but...check out LL Bean every couple of years for ski pants if you aren't desperate for them right now. I got a pair of ski shells years ago that I LOVE. Not too baggy, not too fitted, higher waist (which I need for my size 8-10-12 curvy 5'6 frame). I wear these with light or mid weight base layer in rain, powder, nor'easters and am almost never cold, and never wet. They came with a cute snowflake embroidered pattern up the leg gaitor. Three years ago, I thought I lost them, and ended up buying 3 different pairs of shells to duplicate. Hated them all, and they were not cheap. Then two years ago, LL Bean put a lightly insulated stretchy soft shell ski pant out, and I bought a pair. They run a tad big, but not terribly, and they look and work and feel just as great. And the high waist again keeps me warm and dry. So keep an eye on LL Bean if you don't need anything this season.

And as it turns out, my favorite shells were not lost, just on an extended vacation at the bottom of my ski tube going from resort to resort with a friend who'd borrowed the tube :-).

I have a pair of descents I have worn for years---they are expensive but worth every penny. They are a soft fabric that drapes well---they have shorts!! yay and longs. I don't remember the name but I think they cost around $400 10 years ago when I bought them, but they are still my go to pants.

I'm 5'9" and size 10 (thats an old navy/gap size 10 since EVERY stores sizing is different). I got two new pairs of ski pants this season but haven't skied in either. One is North Face Farrows pant and is called a freeride pant (maybe for snowboarding) and has a relaxed fit with roomier thigh, knee and cuffs. The other pair is 686 brand Dickie's and are called a street fit. No idea what that means but they are looser and sit low on my waist. They are definitely snowboarding pants which is what I have always worn since switching back to skiing in 2003 or so. Also I have always worn a belt with my ski pants since I hate tight clothing but also don't want to have to hold my pants up. It works great. I tried on both my new pants while packing for Diva West and they felt comfy, not super tight anywhere. Both are lines so I hope they aren't too hot.

Three times in the last three years I've walked into large ski retailers and tried on every pant they had and only one fit all 3 times. I have a 30" waist and 43" hips so most pants are a disaster. Only the Boulder Gear Intrigue OTB in Long Sizes fit. I three pair, 2 in 10 Long, 1 in 12 Reg. You've got to get the Long, otherwise it looks ridiculous if it's pulled up high enough. It's very high waisted and stretches to mold with time. It's quite a lovely fit.

A few more things 1)it's also advertised as the AFRC Intrigue pant 2) don't size up it's stretches over time 3) and it looks awful in pictures but great on, it holds everything in.

I'm short and don't have a particularly long torso (in fact, I think my legs are long for my height), so I do *not* understand why everyone else seems fine with ski pants, whereas I always felt like my back was getting cold until I got the bibs. My fleece comes untucked, and even with a hip-length jacket and powder skirt buttoned, I get a cool breeze up my back! My fleeces are even "long" from Eddie Bauer.

Probably it relates to me being "fluffy" - tops don't go as long as intended because the space is taken up horizontally?
