Has Anyone Skied in July/August??

Jilly, you are lucky that you didn't pick this year to come and do YES - it is a terrible season. I flew to Christchurch for meetings last week and was going to sneak in a ski day on Friday (had it all worked out) - instead I walked into town in a balmy 19 degrees (that's 66 Fahrenheit) and met a friend for lunch. Meanwhile on the mountain it was gusting over 100mph (and probably raining). They had to cancel a Masters racing event because there wasn't enough snow cover to drill poles in.

At dinner with family after (not) skiing we discussed how other family who had gone south to avoid the poor Canterbury conditions and found things just as bad in Queenstown.

Hopefully August will deliver and we will get some snow soon

Yup. That 2 week trip to SA costs big $$$. I guess that is why it qualifies as a "once in a lifetime" trip! Maybe we will do it to celebrate when DS graduates from college and our tuition responsibility is ended. He's on his own for medical school.

Yes it's been a it of a fizzer so far. I've got 12 days so far though. I'm in Queenstown at the moment and we've had a bit if snow and more coming later in the week. There is plenty of snow on the groomed trails but only limited off piste. It's starting to fill in though- lots of rocks at the Remarkables , I've had to dedicate my new second hand skis as rock skis- already had some gouges filled. Some of the Us ski team are here training- I hope to spot them today.

Things are starting to look a bit better (and colder) here in Canterbury -- had a couple of small snowfalls this week already (after rain last week did a number on what snowpack there was) and another couple expected in the next few days. I managed a tiny bit of off-piste without damaging my skis yesterday, only hitting rocks on the traverse, though stuck to the manmade snow after that. We're still waiting for the top lifts to open -- hopefully the coming snow will sort that out.

On the whole though, so far this winter (June and July, at least) in Christchurch has been like Los Angeles in January, only thankfully without the smog, as people here haven't been lighting their fires.

It sounds like your season is a lot like the one we had in California. Here's hoping the weather turns around for you.

Well, I guess it depends on how you look at it (and how close you are to the skiing), whether it's unappealing or not. It's mostly just a hike (or skin) but you get to ski down some of the way instead.

So far we got in 2 July days and 2 August days.
