Question: Wrist Protection

Do any of you use anything while skiing to protect your wrist? I have one bad wrist that is easily sparained due to carpal tunnel issues. My carpal tunnel brace is too bulky to wear skiing. Any suggetions from you ski divas?

Thanks!

I talked to my son's orthopedic surgeon about wrist guards for snowboarding and he was against them (just for general use - not really in your case). He said that they've found that, yep, they don't break their wrists, they just break their arm above the brace.:(

Missy - Will they deliver to Europe?

Marge - I need something because I have already fallen a few times this season and sprained my wrist. They were not bad falls either just got off balance and fell, but natural reaction is to reach out to catch yourself even though I try not to.

Thanks ladies! Any more suggestions are welcome. :D

Missy - How did they work for you? Did they give good support while snowboarding? And protection if you fell? Also, did they fit under your glove?

Sorry for all the questions. Just want to make sure before spendin that kind of money on a wrist brace.

Thanks!

Carpal tunnel??

Hi - Carpal tunnel and wrist sprains are quite different entities. Carpal tunnel comes from compression of the nerve between the carpal bones in the hand under a ligamentous band across the palm. It can cause wrist pain, thumb or palm pain and numbness of the hand and fingers, usually thumb and 2nd, third. It can be caused by certain medical problems (e.g rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease), over use syndromes, previous injuries, pregnancy or just bad luck. The pain/numbness tends to be worse at night in the beginning but eventually can become constant. The good news is it is VERY EASY to treat. The simple thing is to get a steroid injection in the tunnel which will often calm things down considerably. The shot is not that bad and it REALLY helps most people. That is sometimes all you need and sometimes it will just keep getting worse. Next step is surgery. It takes less than 15 minutes, and will often give complete relief. I've had it done bilaterally and for the second one, my pain relief was so complete post op I didn't need a single percocet. Another cause of hand/wrist pain which is tough on skiers is DeQuervains tenosynovitis and arthritis at the base of the thumb which are very painful and can also be treated with a steroid injections. If you havn't seen a hand specialist I would recommend that you do because not all general practitioners have a full appreciation for the diagnostic issues in hand/wrist pain. I know some people are "anti-surgery" but suffering is so unnecessary and if you go to a good hand surgeon you should do very well. (I am, by the way, a neurologist but I have rheumatoid arthritis and have had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery and bilateral shoulder surgery and I'm still skiing!!!) I don't mean to PUSH the medical/surgical approach but having had SEVERE hand pain from carpal tunnel and DeQs I know personally how bad it can be. Also, if it's less severe, you can google "cats paw" which is a little theraband stretchy device with holes in it for strengtening the extensors of your hand to conteract carpal tunnel. Some massage therapists and guitarists swear by them though it didn't work for me because of the arthritis in my thumb joint. Good luck!

Katski - Thank you for the response. Yes, it is definately carpal tunnel as it was diagnosed by one of the best hand surgeons (or so I have been told) in the US. It is not bad enough for surgery yet which is a good thing as he is in the US and I am in Germany at least for a few more years.

I went skiing this past weekend and did not have any problems this time, but am having more and more problems when weight lifting. There are some things I just cannot do in the gym any more and it is frustrating. If I am able to take a trip home in the near future I plan to get a re-check of it and ask some more questions. In the meantime, I am just trying to deal with it the best I can as I have yet to find a good doctor for this over here.

They give support but do not protect your wrists if you fall. Never liked these braces who block wrist movement. They may fit under gloves but you have to check that. The supports have rubber/silicone inserts that make them a little bit bulky.

Perhaps not from the netstore in USA but Bauerfeind looks to be a German company.

Bauerfeind IS a german company. Here in Switzerland most Orthopaedics store sell it. I was lucky and bought a pair a light blue ones! Just hate the flesh colored ones.
