We didn't feel like driving all the way back to Mt Snow, having skied there just a couple of days earlier. We were also worried about the holiday crowds there, so we decided to spend a day at Wachusett, figuring many their regular skiers had taken off on vacation.
When we drove off before dawn, the wind was howling, and it was wicked cold. I have to admit I was having second thoughts about going. When we got to the mountain, it was even colder, of course - about 0 at the base and 10 below at the summit with the wind chill.
Now the good news: the conditions were great on every run - groomed/packed powder with no ice to be found. And there weren't that many people skiing, probably due to the cold, because the lodge was packed. Even better, we had access to the entire mountain because they hadn't closed anything for racing as they so often do.
We had a full day of skiing, and I even managed to demo three pairs of skis. (If anyone's interested in a review, I'd be happy to post one in a separate thread.)
So, despite having to check eachother's faces periodically for frost bite, it was a great time - without the big drive.
