I'm heading to Silverton in early March and have a day to spend near Durango. I thought I'd get used to elevation at Purgatory. Any advice?

I haven't been to Purgatory, but I hear (from friends) it's pretty flat--lots of traversing. But a family friendly ski area, if that's what you are looking for.

If you can go a little bit further east, head to Wolf Creek. They have some great glades and nice hike-to terrain. It WILL be an altitude workout, as their base lodge is up over 10,000 feet.

Either way, to adjust to altitude make sure you take things a bit slower, and drink a LOT of water! Be careful with alcohol consumption, as it will have more of an effect at altitude.

Thanks for the warning about Purgatory. I'll be fine with mellow flats for a day. I've only got the one day, so I don't want to go too far east. After the day in Purgatory, I'm going to be doing a 4-day powder/steeps camp at Silverton, so I'm looking for a day to unwind after flying. I'm pretty accustomed to elevation skiing, but thanks for the tip.
