How do you know how fast you're going?

I asked this on epic, but I'd like to see what the divas think.

How do you get an idea of how many mph you're skiing, or of someone else's speed? Is it just a matter of having an eye for it from experience?

The Navman sport tool is pretty natty and you can generally get it on eBay for about half retail price
