Avalanche in Fernie

Reports of an in-bounds avalanche at Fernie today.

I was skiing at Castle Mountain (avoiding the rain, along with what seemed like every resident of western Canada) and heard about it when I turned my phone on after getting off the hill and found several messages wondering where I'd been skiing today.

Details are slim, but it sounds like a group of skiers triggered a slide in Currie Bowl. 7 caught, none buried, one injured. VERY lucky.
What I've seen indicates that the crown was 30 m wide and 1 m deep, and the slide ran for 300 m. Definitely big enough to do some serious damage, and on-resort where people aren't wearing beacons it's more than a little scary.

Be safe out there!

I have skied Fernie, lots of avy potential there.... I remember watching them shoot in the morning way up above the resort, below the "old man's face"...

scary, I just finished the classroom part of avy 1 on wednesday...
