Serious storm brewing..

Squaw's open day tomorrow (the 25th) is a fundraiser thing....Exhibition run only (steep and short), $20 donation per person, no passes as it's a charity thing.

Two places in NC intend to be open by Thanksgiving. Appalachian plans to open Nov. 16. Cataloochee plans to be open Thanksgiving Day, as well as that Fri-Sun. Both places are tiny, but have great snowmaking capability and inexpensive night skiing on all trails. As soon as it's cold enough after Halloween, they will be firing up all snow guns.

Well, the backside of the hurricane is dumping snow in the NC mountains. Expecting 8 inches! So far, two places have announced they will be OPEN FOR SKIING on Halloween. A third is thinking about it.

Snowshoe in WV could end up with 3 FEET of snow. That could mean opening by Thanksgiving.

I'm watching the weather channel, and they're talking about blizzard conditions in West Virginia and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, there's a small group of people stuck out on Fire Island where rescuers couldn't get when they picked up a dozen or so other yahoos who refused to evacuate, losing an emergency vehicle in the process.

Oops, sorry about the hijack.

Cataloochee in NC is not only going to be open for Halloween, they intend to stay open for day skiing for as long as it's cold enough to keep making snow. Probably will get at least 6 inches from the backside of the storm.

Everywhere around here always says Thanksgiving, but they open earlier if they get that magical 24"-36" base. Or later if they don't!

Snowshoe Mountain posted on their web-site that they will open on November 21st, weather permitting. Hopefully the snow they got from Sandy doesn't melt by then! I might be skiing on Thanksgiving.

Killington posted to Facebook that there is a chance they could open Sunday November 4 since conditions for blowing snow will be good the next couple of nights. It amazes me that it can happen that fast, if it indeed works out that way!

Just to clarify: Sugar Mounain near Banner Elk, NC opened October 31st with more than a foot of natural snow. And Cataloochee near Maggie Valley, NC also opened that day, it's second earliest opening ever, though they only had about 6 inches of natural snow; They'd started making snow sooner.
