Looking for something wide and fun...Icelantic Oracle v. Atomic Elysian

Hi everyone, I'm new to posting but have been lurking here for a while and soaking up the great reviews/advice...and now I could use some to help me look at skis.

I am: 31, 5'6", 125lb, int-advanced, skiing Copper/WP/MJ in Colorado. I curently have 2009 Lotta Luvs in 156, they are fun on groomers but terrible in powder. I ski a little bit of everything, ripping groomers is fun, non-steep bumps, bowls, glades.

I demoed the Oracles in a 155 last weekend and was in love. I was nervous when I first got them on because they ride a little short and it didn't look like much ski in front of me, but I enjoyed (had a blast) in powder for the first time, felt confident in the trees, enjoyed the bumps and went FAST, I am normally on the pokey side. My snowboarding buddy was a little shocked at what a big difference they made in my confidence level over the Lotta's. I tried the Oracle's in a 165 today and it was just too much ski, hard to get on edge, I really had to plan every turn, and I avoided bumps like the plague.

Yesterday I rode the Elysian's in a 159. Not a lot of powder to be found but I actually went (of my own accord) down a double black with bumps and actually felt quite competent. They made for a fun day on a variety of terrain.

I'm having trouble deciding between the 2, and would appreciate input, especially on length of ski vs my size. And if anyone is familiar with these 2 and has ideas about something similiar that I might enjoy I would love to hear. I plan on keeping my Lottas for groomers and rocks, and would like to add a second wider ski that will allow me to enjoy powder.

Thank you!!

E

:welcome: My first thought is that you tried the skis in two different sets of conditions so it's hard to compare them. My second thought is that you loved the Oracles in the 156 but found them too much ski in the 165. Don't worry about what length you "should" be riding. Ride the length you like. At 125lbs, you are a lightweight and in bumps and trees shorter generally is better. If the 156s floated you in powder as well, then you are good to go. It's all about having fun. Buy the ski that makes you "woop" all the way down the mountain and then ... enjoy! Let us know what you decide.

SkiNurse is on the 155s ... she absolutely loves them. Skis them well, too. Once thing I noticed is that the turn radius changes quite a bit between the sizes; it's 13m at 155, 16m at 165, so this could be a big reason for the difference. Quite often there is only a meter or two difference. I always thought 10cm jumps in sizing were tough, as well. Seven is better.

Pinto is right...I LOVE THEM! They are fun & lively in all conditions (trees, bumps, powder, steeps, groomed)...the only thing they don't like is really hardpacked....then they are a bit chattery. I have not used any of my other skis since the beginning of the season...definitely my favorite all mountain ski.

@ESGCO

I have a pair of Elysians and they are great skis and I think they'd be perfect for you, especially since you are out west.

We are coming to the U.S. July 13th, and first thing is a week on a houseboat at Lake Shasta... can't wait. Lake will be full! First time in years!

Just wanted to put in a good word for the updated/renamed Elysian, the Atomic Vantage 95CW. Got on this ski last year, had a lovely experience, would have them in a heart beat. Wasn't soft snow, really gave me pause - and they were too long at 170 (all they had). The ski was golden.

In the end, if the Oracle is too much ski for me, my oldest daughter will enjoy them. By next winter she will be as tall as me, but a much stronger skier than me.

I need to post some of the pics and video from Sauze D'Oulx from two weeks ago.... powder porn LOL

Skied my Icelandic Oracles for the first time. So much fun, they turn so quick, which suits me. Played around off the Gad chairs at Snowbird. First some blues, then some blacks, a little regulator Johnson, quite a few bumps, some trees - it was all good. DH #1 convinced me I don't need to keep my Hells Belles, so they're off to 2nd tracks consignment store in SLC. No need to schlep them home... will see how they handle Squaw this week.

I'm sat here in Reno at the moment. 4WD and chains, Gold Ranch to Colfax. So, we have chains, so we 'could' drive up there. BUT. Just because we 'can', doesn't mean its a good idea...

I have my mom with me. She refuses to go up there, as a driver or a passenger... and in the realm of life, this is optional, isn't it?
