Ski movie recommendations?

Can anyone suggest any good Skiing movies anyone. Looking for something real other than extreme skiing movies. Thoughts of any would be great. Thanks.

This isn't "real" (as in non-fiction), but it's a classic ski movie and is coming out on DVD next month: Downhill Racer, with Robert Redford. Lots of good skiing action and Robert Redford; how can you go wrong? :becky:

Other than that, my favorite ski movie is Steep. Yeah, there's extreme skiing, but it's totally worth it.

Movies that aren't extreme, can be really cheezy like Fire and Ice. I'll have few more titles for you after our "bad ski movie night" in November!

Most productions are highlighting the extreme side as most skier don't do it. And some are as SnowHot says - Travelogue at the Rotary club!

It was JUST on TCM last weekend! :D Almost forgot how awesome it is. Interesting: was made BEFORE the release of Redford's skyrocket to fame: the release of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. Redford had a huge role in the production of Downhill Racer, including script input (per Robert Osborne's pre- and post-movie info). Some of the footage is from the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble.

I'm personally a fan of Warren Miller's super-old stuff from the 80's, when WM himself was totally involved and narrating: Ski Time, SnoWonder, etc - lots more less extreme footage and lots more COMEDY.

"Real" movies bring to mind the stuff by Meathead Films. East-coast based and down-to-earth. There are some park scenes in their flicks, but it's interesting to watch. Nice to see them skiing the stuff that's local to use New Englanders, too.

Movies with the intent of plot: Corny but fun to watch
Maltese Flamingo
Aspen Extreme
Hot Dog

Ski Porn
Can't beat Meatheads films as Severine says,
Born of Ice is one of my favourites, followed by Winter Wanderland

Ski School I and II.

Like MSL I like the old WM films. I have a few on DVD. "50" is interesting too.

We watched "Downhill Racer" on TCM this weekend too! Great footage, gotta love those late 60s ski clothes (the ladies HAD to have been wearing Bogner pants). But what I gawked at was the length of those skis! They're longer than my XC skis!

I'd love to get some of the old WM films. There's some footage of his old stuff in the trailer for the new release.

I think for anyone interested in film, you can't beat the German Mountain Films of Arnold Franck, many of which star Leni Riefenstahl. She eventually became the propagandist filmmaker for Hitler. But, the movies, made in the 20s have fantastic old ski footage -- no special effects back then. Blue Light, Holy Mountain and the White Hell of Pitz Palau are a few of the best-known films.

I'd highly recommend Swift Silent Deep... released this year, documentary about Jackson Hole Air Force (and lots on the history of Jackson Hole and the rise of backcountry skiing in North America as well). Very interesting, lots of interviews with JHAF members and some really cool old skiing footage. Definitely not your standard ski movie format, very much a documentary.

Thanks for the recommend, TJM. Just watched the trailer on-line and look forward to the film itself!

Some fantastic footage of ridiculously deep snow in Japan and a story about some guys who are making their own rides, including the "noboard"- a board without bindings. Snowsurfing basically.

I run with both skiers and knuckledraggers, so the snowporn at our house has a lil sumthin for everyone :grouphug:

If snowboarding is not at all your thing then this might not be the flick for you, but there is some beautiful snow fun in this movie.
