Women's Ski Magazine

I read in an e-mail I received today that there is going to be a new women'e ski magazine. A complimentary issue is to be sent to subscribers of Skiing Magazine. I don't know when it is to be published. Has anyone else heard/read anything about it?

It's called Women's Skiing, and it's not really a regular magazine; more like a supplement to Ski and Skiing magazines that's going to be sent out to 100,000 female subscribers with the November issues. I don't believe it's an on-going thing. The publisher is Boulder-based Mountain Sports Media (Ski and Skiing's publisher). Maybe they're testing it out to see how it flies.

One could hope it would be fun, informative and worthwhile, but I doubt it. I am usually an optimist, but not in this case.
I get both Ski and Skiing, but will let the subscription run out. The content is so poor and getting worse! Skiing seems to be all about a raunchy apres-ski scene and 'sick' skiing. God, I must be getting old. Starting to sound like my parents.
Hopefully, it will be great read.

I definitely agree with you about Skiing magazine. I think their target audience is young, single men in their early twenties. I can't relate to it at all. Not for me.

But I do think Ski has gotten a little better; at least their last issue actually had stuff in it about skiing. That said, I don't think they've done a very good job serving women. I think they treat us pretty much as an after-thought. But I guess when you're the big gorilla in the room, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

I got my magazine!

It came yesterday. I'll save my thoughts until others have received it.

BTW, the Nov/Dec. issue of Women's Adventure magazine has good coverage of women's skiing featuring 12 women who share their secrets on skiing a variety of terrain.

We have 2 mags that are for the Canadian audience, but could be a good read for anybody. Ski Canada and SkiPresse. Both have websites and Ski Press has an american version. Ski Press is free at resorts and ski shops, so it's full of advertising, but the content is usually good till the spring issue about the Whistler ski and snowboard festival. Ski Canada has been around forever. It has its issues that I just throw out, but usually its good. As for ski tests - Ski Press has the best one. As for women's content I would go with Ski Press too. Its probably because they have women on the editorial staff. For interest I had nothing but problems dealing with Ski or Skiing, can't remember which. I had to send them a money order. They wouldn't take a credit card. Every Canadian mag I get, I use my credit card to pay either on line or by mail. So usually I pick up the first issue of the year at a news stand and keep an eye if I see anything on the cover through the year.

So what does everyone think of this, anyway? Just got mine today, so I haven't had the chance to look at it yet.

I think it actually had more "ski" related content than the standard issues that accompanied it. Was I impressed? Not really, but it looks like a good start.

Like others here, I will not be renewing my subscription. Frankly I don't give a crap about apres ski clubbing. Now show me the "How to eat for under $40 a day"(yeah like to see that one), the resorts that give family discounts, and more than just one page to actuall skiing related issues I might be interested.

Lisamarie - nice review. I totally agree!!! I know a 16 yr old girl that would have found the underwear matching thing fun. That does seem to be their targeted demographic, single, 14-29, mostly male, with lots of disposable income (either their own or daddy's).

I missed the "Does skiing make my but bigger" article, I though, "No Way!" Went back and looked, yep it's there. If that is not a BIG SCREAMING HINT that this magazine absolutely does NOT have the serious skiier(or anyone that likes outdoor sports) in mind, I don't know what is. It just sounds like a teeny bopper comment.

Is it online? I'd like to take a look but don't subscribe to Skiing right now.

I posted on Epic about this. I never got a copy of this mag. :( But, from what you are all saying, it sounds like Glamour Skiing, which is too bad. I don't mind some fluff, but it would be nice to have someone take us seriously and address our needs...

NOT Impressed!

I ranted on Epic, so I won't rant here.

However, my comment over there stands:

Why do only the men test the 'unisex' skis, and the women test the 'women's' skis? This women's issue wuld have been the perfect place for the women testers to test the women's and men's versions of any given ski on a side-by-side basis. That would be a true 'women's' ski test!
