Who's taken their Transpack on an airplane?

As a carry-on?

I'm leaving for Solitude on Saturday, so I need to know!

My old Transpack was the junior (i.e. kid's) size. And that fit into the overhead compartment, no problem. This year I bought the next size up (I think it's a TRV). Anyone flown with one of those? Did it fit in the overhead okay, with your boots?

I really hope that this isn't poor forum protocol (to refer to another forum), and if it is, my apologies....

When researching boots bags yesterday, I ran across this thread over at Epic Ski. Some of the latter posts talk about bringing the Transpack on a plane. Of course, personal experiences from people on this forum are also good to hear.

Anyway, here it is: https://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=29689

Sorry again if I am breaking some sort of forum rules!!

Soundgarden, That's too funny. I wish I had a nickel for every time I linked to Epic for something.
It is definitely best to have our own discussion but often times there is some good information on Epic based on the same topic.

You will find that SkiDiva, EpicSki and often times, TGR blend well together.

SkiDiva, I didn't use a transpack, but Terry used a bag bigger than a transpack when we went to Colorado.
Only one time, he had to take his helmet out of his bag to fit the whole thing in the compartment.
The rest of the time, it all fit fine with helmet and boots.

Why don't you just go for it and let us know how it works out!:becky:

It depends on the size of the plane. I was asked to gate check mine on my most recent flight from Denver to Aspen. I sweetly stated that I would wear them instead. The gate attendant rolled her eyes at me and waved me on. It fit fine. On all other flights it hasn't been an issue.

Agree w/nm here re size of aircraft. Embraer, probably not. This was always a concern of mine with regard to Transpacks, because of their "depth." The triangular configuration is great from car to lodge but kind of a pain on shuttle buses, and I also worried about air travel w/same. Any mid to long range size plane will be fine. What are your gateways for this trip?

I did gate checked as instructed. Because the bag was simply put right next to the cargo door, I didn't feel too worry about it.

(my boots are in a small carry-on sized suitcase so there's not a chance of someone taking it by mistake. The one reservation I have for the transpack is it doesn't have wheels -- great for airports.)

I never have a problem with gate check, with my boots, and I've always had good luck.
The problem would be if you had your lap top in your transpac.
Wonder how my hot gear bag will make it!:becky:

I'm planning to bring mine on an upcoming trip. I think the secret is not to overstuff it. That way it'll fit more easily in the overhead bin.
There is NO WAY I am checking my boots.

I'll have to remember that! There's no way I'm checking my boot bag.

I was asked to check it when I checked in....I have the biggest size and they said it wouldn't fit in overhead...so I complied. Next time I fly though, I may borrow hubby's smaller bag to take on plane.

Just make sure you don't have a bottle of sunscreen you forgot about stuffed somewhere in there...

I was already planning to leave my helmet out. Maybe I should just use the kid's-size bag, like I did last time. It was amazing all the stuff I managed to fit into it -- not only my boots, but my laptop surrounded by a day's worth of ski clothes. Made it kind of heavy, but it fit in the overhead all right!

MSL, we're flying Southwest from Manchester, NH to Las Vegas, then on to Salt Lake.

You'll be okay, esp with the smaller bag - big one probably okay as well. Southwest's fleet doesn't vary - they only fly one type of aircraft. Bins are sufficiently large, esp if you get an "A" boarding pass. They might list carry-on max dimensions on their website. If you do online check-in 24 hours before departure (no sooner), you'll score the A boarding pass. Manchester is my usual gateway as well, I usually fly Southwest from there to wherever.

I used my High Sierra which is not as deep as Transpack with no problem. Southwest flies all 727s and the overhead is pretty good. You should be fine as long as you don't stuff the Transpack -- leave a little wiggle room so it's malleable and you should be fine.

For everyone who's wondering -- my Transpack fit into the overhead of my Southwest plane, no problem! So if you have one, don't be afraid to take it -- at least on Southwest.

Fabulous! :cheer:

I don't think about these things....because I throw everything into the back seat. I've never flown anywhere to ski! This is good information for the future!

Indeed, good to hear. I figured it would be okay on a Southwest 737, they are good size planes and overheads. However, might be a smaller plane for a shorter hop, which means less inside space overall. The overheads on some of the short hoppers are almost non-existent, but they do have gate check. This is a good alternative.

And yeah, NVG, it's really interesting to fly w/gear, especially now with all the weight limits and TSA. My son has yet to have an equipment bag not get pulled aside for manual check (hygienic gloves and all) after x-ray.

It's just a whole lotta lugging, for sure.
Worth the trouble?
YEP.
