Which ski do I buy?

Patsy

Diva in Training
Hello All, I desperately need new skis as my old ones have literally fallen apart. I was on Head Total Joy 148cms. I am a fit 65 year old and 150cm tall and weigh 100lbs. I have skied for many years and am an advanced skier skiing 4-5 weeks a year and ski fast and aggressively. I am looking at trialing the Santa Ana, Black Pearl and would happily buy the Total Joy again if Whistler were stocking them anywhere. Bearing in mind my weight I feel I need something I can flex as I don’t have much weight to put behind the turns and I don’t want too heavier a ski for the same reason. Any recommendations on what I should trial? Feel free to expand my list. Thanks in advance

Hi @Patsy . I'm assuming you are mostly in Whistler and would, therefore, like something in the All Mountain (AM) category?? Re width, the Total Joy is on the "skinnier" side of AM category. I prefer widths in the 80's at my age (I'm also 65, but I'm considerably taller and heavier than you). The last 4 years I've been on the Volkl Blaze 86 and it has been stellar in all conditions. You'll see a lot of other Divas who favor this ski. I just bought the Fischer Ranger 84 and had it out in Steamboat last week. It was great in everything I threw at it including slick hardpack and shallow crud. As with the Blaze, if you do a search on this site you'll turn up some useful information on this ski too. My third "fun" ski is the Black Crows Vertis Birdie (85), but you may want something a bit burlier if you are aggressive. The BCVB is very playful and forgiving but I don't think it would be outstanding in deeper conditions or heavy snow.

If you are considering something wider, the Volkl Blaze 94 is also a great ski. I would've taken this ski to Steamboat, but they were hurting for snow and none was expected (or received) the week I was there.

Good luck w/your search!!

I'm sure one of the EVO stores must have Head. There are lots of on line shops for skis too.

Asogear has some...They are Corbetts out of Oakville Ontario

OP is mentioning Whistler to buy, so she must be in Canada. American online stores are going to be really expensive. Exchange rate is almost 50%, but no tariffs yet.

Good point @Jilly . I wasn't even thinking exchange rates b/c I'm so used to going the other direction where the rate is usually favorable.

The Fischer Ranger 84 is definitely on the softer side. It is super easy to flex and very agile and playful. The 2025 did not change from the 2024 so either would work. I ski the 167 which is on the longish side for me, but it is not a problem.

It’s really hard to get your hands on narrower demos in Whistler. The demo hut up top has a handful of sub 90 skis, they only had the Absolute Joy from the Joy line when I was in a few weeks ago. I wasn’t crazy about it. I tried the Arcade 84 which was super fun but quite burly and the shortest they had was 160. I don’t remember if they had BPs or SAs as that is not what I am in the market for right now. Great deal though, $25 for a day and you can swap the skis out as much as you want.

Alpine Pro sells the Ranger 84, but they don’t demo it. They do probably have the most expertise on narrower skis in town and they do have lots of demos just not that one.

Fanatyk does demos too and I think they are a Head dealer.

It also seems from the website that they might actually have demo days back at WSSF this year…. fingers crossed as those used to be amazing for trying a half dozen skis in a day.

Oh they have the Stance 84 too. It was fine but probably not the right day for it (pretty firm for Whistler)

This site is new old stock. So nothing wrong with it. (I buy running shoes all the time for these guys) But you can't send anything back unless they made the mistake
I've not bought skis from them but a good proportion of my outdoor clothing comes from there.
