What's your best day skiing?

Okay, I have to balance Wendy's thread, we can't have too many sad threads with out a happy one as well.

So, mine is a bit of a toss up. First, it's the day in December of 2004 that I came out to Colorado from Northern Virginia to see my cousin graduate. We went to A-Basin to ski and half way down the first run I decided I needed to move back to Colorado.

Second, I think was the day that I had the pleasure to meet my first Divas and Bears and ski with them at Copper. Not only did I learn a lot about that mountain but I skied with some of the best people I've ever skied with.

Finally, ranking right up there are the days I've gotten to ski with my dad in the last few years. We're really right at the same level now and we have a lot of fun skiing together. Last year he finally admitted that I'm faster than him.

Your BEST ski day EVER!

Okay, in protest to the bad ski day thread....

Come on, let's all get psyched and talk about our truly amazing, wonderful, perfect days!
(way more fun!)

Would love to hear some of yours -- when/where, etc.
I know I sigh-with-a-smile at the one I still consider my All-Time favorite ski day.

But.....before I launch, would love to read some others'.
Do you have a particular stand-out?
Photos?
Let's have some fun.

Yeah, that was funny....."great minds think alike!"

My stand-out day was in early April, 1979, at Copper Mt. I had finally "crossed over" into advanced skiing. First day at altitude for that trip. Total Bluebird, and THE BEST corn I have ever skied, to THIS day.

Ummmm....take it easy???
NOT.
Man, did we fly.
Best day ever. 55-60 degrees. Corn lasted 4+ hours.

Of course, I "paid dearly" for 2 days afterward for that breach of altitude adjustment.
Did I care? NO.
Do I remember the post-effects? NO.
Do I remember that Perfect Day?

YES!!!!

Best day... toss up between May 10th and 11th, 2008 at A-basin. Thanks, Divas! :becky: :becky: :becky: Just what I needed. Great conditions on Saturday, great help on Sunday, and awesome company all around.

Well I have to say that best days definately out number bad days. One that does stick out was Copper Mtn, 20 years ago. 18" of snow over night. Powder!! We were with Club Med and due to altitude was was slow. But that day, everything was coming together. I hadn't skied powder that season, but had spent 2 weeks the year before in France skiing in it just about everyday. I can still remember the look on the instructors face when she stopped and I was the only skier standing up still. The rest were rolling around in the snow! That floating feeling was great.

The only other would be getting my CSIA 2 in 1984. One week from hell with a great reward at the end!

Hey Jilly, can you pray for a repeat of that? Maybe some day during the first week of March? ;)

1. Christmas day at Vail 2 years ago. This was my first time skiing powder. It wasn't much, maybe 6 inches, but The Boy and I played in the back bowls all day. It was my first time skiing in widely spaced trees where I wasn't scared shitless. I had some tough times, because I don't really know how to ski powder, but we skiied alot. And I saw a weasel! No crowds...nice snow. We did get mired in the flats of Mongolia bowl but other than that, it was a great day!

2. Breckenridge when I hired a private instructor for a full day. The day started decent, with drills and things on the trails, but then the snow started to fall and my instructor and i pretty much played cat and mouse all day off the t-bar and chair 13 and I even got to make a bunch of tracks on some of the cool little spots off the T-bar. She showed me all kinds of cool hidden trails in the woods, and I have never skied so well as I did following her. It was a really good time!

Okay, I've got the pic, and the date was 4/8/79.
OMG, THOSE ARE THE GLOVES!
Didn't realize until I looked closely that I had been wearing them, the day before THE DISCOVERY :faint:
Well, mousy made for a great day...

Wow, how many decades has THAT chairlift been gone....?
(Note to self: Mother of Mercy, was this actually almost THIRTY years ago...??)

Looks like the B1 chair and B-B1 have only been gone 8 to 10 years! It was replaced with the "Super Bee" a 6 person lift. Pretty amazing IMO! Seems like a lot longer thats for sure!

Nice pic!

I can't narrow it down to one day, so I will have to go with the first week of December for the last 8 years. My Heli trip:becky:!! Haven't had a bad year yet!!
Hoping for loads of snow for this year!!:snow:

I can't even remotely choose one day. There are days that stick out because of who I was with, or because of the snow, or because of where I was, but there's no way I can't pick one.

But, just because it changed the way I looked at skiing forever, I'll nominate Jan 2006 for contention - my first real ski tour. Bluebird sky with 6-7" of fresh snow. Our avy instructor took us on a tour to what is now still one of my favorite spots on the planet. First time I'd ever experienced backcountry powder, and it almost brought tears to my eyes.

Also in contention was touring in Grand Teton National Park in Jan 07. Huge vertical, insane views, and a really long descent in perfect snow.

This thread is making me all giddy for skiing!

Some great ski experiences that stand out in the 4 seasons since I've been skiing:

1: The first time I tried a quarter pipe and small jumps at Okemo in the WAA program, February '06. I don't think I'd ever felt so giddy or had so much fun on skis before that.

2: A day skiing Stratton in March '07 with my buddy Mike. Perfect snow, not many other skiers, great company. The rest of what happened in Stratton that day stays in Stratton!

3: My last day skiing/riding at Big Sky February '08 with DH -- powder falling all day to make fresh tracks but not so deep to hang me up, snow the perfect temperature so I could fly down the roads simply by shifting my weight ever so slightly from side to side, skiing the half pipe that was snowy enough to keep my speed down, and enjoying the snow with my wonderful man  .

Is it December yet? :snow:

That's exactly when it was!! It snowed at night and sunshine during the day the last two days we were there. Let's hope for a repeat!

I'd probably have to say that it was a breakthrough day last season at Beaver Creek. There was 9 inches of fresh powder, I had stayed up at a friend's place in Avon the night before and didn't have to deal with traffic that morning. Conditions were fabulous, and my friend pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I loved it. It was the first day I really truly skiied black runs, and it was such a confidence booster to realize that I COULD ski black runs. And not only that, but that it was FUN! We skiied the full day (kind of unusual for me) and my legs held up. Can't wait to have some more days like that this season...and on much better skis for it to boot!

I can't pick out one day either, there are so many...but one stands out--2 years ago when my new ski-bud asked me when I was going to stop smiling!
