Question: What Type of Mountain Bike?

I am probably the only one who replaced a hardtail with a hardtail  But the new one is carbon and almost 3 kilos lighter than my old Scott. It also has 29" wheels and overall I like it better. I took a few downhill lessons on rental bikes, but generally I don't ride anything technical with tight switchbacks so hardtail serves the purpose.

I hear you! I loved 29 inch wheels and I did a surprising amount of technical and dh riding on the hardtail. Living in rocky eastern Pennsylvania, though: ultimately it's just masochistic insanity not to ride a full suspension if you can afford it. I'm keeping an eye on the "plus" tire trend, too. If those bikes turn out to have staying power and good geometry and tire quality, they'd be really well-suited for areas like ours.
