What qualities do you look for in a ski?

Seems like everyone has their individual preferences: damp, lively, heavy, light, stiff, soft, shortish, longer, etc.

So what do you look for in the ski you use the most?

For trees I look for something similar to a mogul ski. Not too much side cut, soft flex, and med/short ish.
Spring crud, I want a ski that is a bit more burly with a little energy to pop me out of the carve. Side cut optional.

For a Carver, I want something a bit longer, with a nice side cut, shorter turning radius, a bit of flexibility and a stash of energy to kick me in the butt!

Different properties for different purposes! Thats why the Diva needs a Quiver!!!:D

That's why manufacturers make different kind of skis: to suit different applications!

* My long lasting and un-dying love affair is with bumps. So I like them soft, slim and smooth. ;) Shorter is better for bumps.

* My new found love is fluffy bottomless powder. Though those only come once in a while so I don't keep one for those conditions. I will rent if the condition is right. For those condition, I like it a bit fatter, but still soft and smooth (not too radical side-cuts). A little longer this time around.

* I'm not crazy about groomers, though when the snow is soft it can be fun to carve at speed. For that application, it would need to be curvy and midium soft and midium length. This isn't high priority so I'll look for deals.

What I learned this season is that different skis perform better in certain conditions. I now have softer, shorter skis for early season days, soft Western conditions days, bumps, and playing with kids at a smaller hill, Attiva AC3s for ripping down groomers and varied East Coast conditions, twin tips for the park, and twin tip powder skis that I can't wait to try out West in February '08!

I also learned (thanks skigirl) that shorter skis work better for me for a number of reasons. Maybe in a few years I'll go longer, but for now, I'm set for awhile! I like women's skis too because they're lighter and I like the graphics.;)
