What is your bootfitting prep?

Going back a bit...I left the end choice of my boot up to the fitter. I had an idea of what I'd end up with based on reviews, but after a fairly lengthy consultation and analysis of what I wanted from boot, got something which I personally wouldn't have picked but ultimately had the flex etc I needed - and I'm happy with that he picked (more advanced than I thought, but I like the flex, turn out), I like the colour and everything. I got footbeds at the same time which tbh are not perfect; I've posted here about the pain I get from one initially. However, since we've pretty much been in lockdown ever since I haven't had the opportunity to get it fixed (which is a service the fitter operates). I was so impressed by the fitter that I made my husband go back and get some boots too, and he loves his big time.

@MissySki How long did your appointment run? I think I have to start my boot saga all over again (had a baby earlier this year and my feet have seemed to grow half a size based on trying to buy regular shoes) and I'm going to be about an hour from Totem Pole next month for our fall getaway. Your review is great so thinking might need to work in a visit while I'm nearby.

I was there for around 4.5 hours total, but I did go for a snack break for around 45 mins in the middle while Torin got my orthotics built and did the stretches to my boot shells. Then the last 45 mins or so were also spent on looking at liners for my AT boots and some off the shelf footbeds for my cross country boots (multi tasking!). So, I'd bet on a few hours to be safe if it were to be for trying on boots and then if you like something doing any necessary boot work to start/factor in if orthotics are needed/factor in if any alignment work is needed/etc.. I always make an appointment beforehand to be sure he's not otherwise engaged, and for this one he was like yeah probably better to start as early as possible lol.

Super helpful, thank you! Snack breaks are also very important haha

They are! haha

Also, we were in masks, so it's was nice to get some fresh air too. I feel I can get a little warm trying on boots, though I was there on a 70 something degree day which might account for that. In an case, I didn't mind the chance to get away from my own recirculated air for a little bit. :laughter:

Hahaha that's totally fair! Glad to hear about the masks too. Just shot them a note for an appointment, super excited to get this process started (and get back on the mountain this winter!).

It sucks when your favourite shoes don’t fit right anymore, doesn’t it? Since it is only a half size difference I would suggest taking your current boots with you just in case he says you don’t need to go down a shell size, just some tweaking. Your current boots aren’t that old yet, are they? Or do you feel you’ve outgrown them in other ways too, like perhaps you are wanting a stiffer boot?

Oh definitely should bring old boots with you anytime going to a bootfitter! I brought mine too even though I was for sure getting new ones.

The worst! I've been shoving them in haha but new ones have been hard to find. I'm hoping that maybe it's more of a width thing than a length thing and then we can just expand the boot again since they are relatively new pair. Honestly though, the boots have been such a pain that if he suggests a new pair, I'm not opposed haha

When I was having trouble and pain with other boots, Torin made them work well for years, multiple pairs.. So ya never know! I do think there is something to be said for starting from scratch with and going forward with the same person though. Then there's good continuity and rationale for everything being done by one person in them.

I headed up to VT bright and early today, excitement fueling me more than sleep. The shop my fitter owns isn’t open to the public yet this season, so it’s by appointment only for fittings. This was great because I was the only one there as a customer along with my fitter and a couple employees working on stuff for racer kids who have been coming in already too.

To cut to the chase, we ended up going with the Technica Mach 1 LV Pro W. The shell truly seems to be made for my foot and is a VERY close fit everywhere. A cool feature is a tongue that can be moved fore/aft on the liner which gives me actual contact on my low instep and can still adjust further! It wraps my foot like nothing I’ve had before, maybe a little too much pressure over my nonexistent arch even, which has NEVER happened and felt so good. They are also the tiniest bit shorter than my previous boots so I was worried about that at first, but once I had them on for awhile and using power straps my toes felt good and not crunched. These are truly a low volume boot all around. We still did the usual stretching for me in the forefoot area of course. This was the boot he’d originally had in mind for me, and he was very spot on based on the fit. Nothing else came close to this one for me. We didn’t do a ton to the boot because I need to ski them to see where we need to go, but I am so darn excited to get them on snow and see how they feel! After the shaping for my forefoot they are very snug but feel really good whereas they were quite constricting beforehand. Amazing what a few tweaks can do. Here’s a zoomed in picture of my boots, notice the bump outs inside to accommodate my forefoot area! Those are the spots where I have large bony protrusions on the big toe side. This plastic shows the specific spots much more clearly than any previous boot, very cool to see the boot shaped exactly like this. And that they actually keep the shape. My Langes would tend to try and go back to their original shape with their plastic, so we had to stretch them multiple times when they would shrink back a bit each time, and they still didn’t look this distinct. This is why boots will never fit me out of the box, that protrusion stuck in boots that are pretty straight down the side cause me all sorts of trouble up front.

Oh, and the reason he wanted me in the 120 flex is because we can soften if needed. He very much disliked how much I was flexing the 105 version and some other boots in that range. I was really unsure how that could be the case given my size, and he thinks it’s my long tibias giving me the leverage versus my height/weight. He also mentioned that he has customers who are much larger in general and cannot flex a boot almost at all and then sometimes has tiny folks who just crush boots. So he doesn’t go by weight/size exclusively in this regard. I’m a little apprehensive about the stiffness to start, but agree that it’s better to start stiffer and adjust as needed than starting at too low of a point. If anyone remembers my feeling like I couldn’t flex my 110 Langes last season, he said the plastic was really tired on it and thinks I flex it just fine and it was more feeling like the output wasn’t as expected with the boot versus not being able to flex it. I guess this could be the case as even taking bolts out didn’t seem to do what I’d hoped yet I did feel like I was bending the boot.. I just wasn’t getting the expected feedback I was looking for. Since I do remember a time where those boots did feel great in that regard, I’m inclined to think it’s as good a hypothesis as any.

I’m just so curious to see how they feel on snow!! I will likely need to go to Big Snow asap!! Unfortunately I have plans the next couple of weeks at least that won’t allow it, but we’ll see after that.
sounds great! I was looking at this boot, but ordered Salomon s max 110..ordered two sizes, but If they dont feel great, I will maybe try these. I had technica before and the shell shape fit quite well.

Still bummed at not being able to try my new boots at Big Snow last weekend. At least I can wear them around the house a bit and multitask while I work haha. I don’t even really think I need to besides trying to get my feet used to being confined again though. While everything is very snug, I’m not in any discomfort. Can’t wait to get them on snow!

I took them off a little after posting, and will say that my right little toe started feeling a little squished and my right foot felt a bit crampy over the top when I took it out of my boot. Left feels great overall. So might need to dial back the micro adjustments on my lower buckles on the right side, or it might have just been unhappy being confined. That's something I dislike at first too, not knowing where I want my buckles set at.

I’m in central MA, so it’s around 3 hours each way, but a welcome diversion when snow isn’t available outside!

@MissySki I'm so grateful for the recommendation to see Torin! I went yesterday and my boots already feel so much better. I felt like my concerns were heard, where my previous experience with trying to get my boots adjusted started to make me feel like I was crazy haha

What he said immediately was the issue was that I have tight ankle/calf mobility (which I knew and brought up previously) and that heel lifts would solve 80% of my issues! This was something many people here suggested, but I got shot down for suggesting. He said this was what was missed when I was buying boots initially. I also told him how the boots I had previously turned out to be a size too big, and interestingly he said that probably helped with the way my leg moves and why I never had an issue really before.

Interestingly, he said my boots were actually too soft for the way my legs move. There are pieces cut out of the sides for my calves, which he said was a good move, but didn't give me enough support. He replaced the Velcro strap with a Booster strap to replace the stiffness.

Finally, we remolded the boots using this like foot pad I wore to give more space to accommodate how my foot has changed.

Trying them on at the end felt like night and day. He said the last 10% is tricky and he would help make further adjustments, but I needed to ski in them first.

I haven't skied Okemo in about a decade, but I think we might try to get a trip in early in the season so that way I can get any further changes made.

Yay, so happy to hear you had a good experience!! I really like Torin, I think he's extremely knowledgeable and also such a good guy. Very thoughtful and takes everything you have to say into account. Just wonderful to deal with every time I've needed him. Looking forward to hearing how things are when you get to ski your boots again. :goodluck:
