What happens when a mask policy is violated?

Wow! Mt. Hood Meadows gets the award for really being clear that violations of the mask usage rule will not be tolerated. Not just in the lift line either.

Meadows suspends passes for mask noncompliance and defiance

But for those that continue to threaten our season with their ignorance or defiance, they will no longer be welcome at Meadows. General Manager Greg Pack confirms that, “We have removed some people from the mountain and suspended their passes for not complying with our masking guidelines and for their hostile behavior towards our team.” Pack says our lift attendants have taken the brunt of this disobedience and protocols are in place to address this behavior, saying, “Moving forward if you need to be reminded to wear a mask you will receive a warning. We will ask for your pass to take down your information. If you are polite then we will put a note in your pass profile and you can move on with your day. If you are disrespectful or treat our team members poorly, your pass will be suspended for a minimum of two weeks.”

Before your pass will be reactivated, offenders will need to meet with our Department of Public Safety manager and other members of our management team. If you agree to comply, your pass will then be reactivated. If there are any further issues, the pass will be pulled for the entire season, and you will jeopardize any season pass purchase in the future.

Schweitzer management and staff has had enough issues during night skiing. There won't be any for the MLK weekend.

https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2021/jan/10/schweitzer-mountain-resort-shuts-down-twilight-ski/
"Twilight skiing at Schweitzer Mountain Resort has been called off next weekend due to noncompliance with mask and social distancing policies, the resort announced Sunday.

“The bottom line is, the rules are the rules and we need everybody to comply with them, and it’s not happening,” said Dig Chrismer, marketing manager at Schweitzer.

In a Facebook post Sunday morning, the resort said “due to an overwhelming lack of compliance with our mask policies and social distancing,” twilight skiing will not be offered over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend from Jan. 15-17. Planned fireworks will take place Saturday, but must be enjoyed from condos and the parking lot, according to the resort.
. . .
“I will not continue to tolerate the verbal abuse that has been directed towards our staff as they have attempted to enforce our safety requirements,” wrote Tom Chasse, president and CEO. “We hope this will only be a ‘pause’ but we will need to reassess our approach to twilight skiing before we commit to any future dates.”

In early December, Schweitzer threatened to close unless skiers and snowboarders wore face coverings when waiting in lift lines and inside the resort. Through Dec. 11, Schweitzer allowed season pass holders to roll their pass forward a year if they didn’t want to cover their faces.
, , ,
Under normal circumstances, Schwitzer would see about 5,000 people during the day on a Saturday, and maybe 500 skiers or snowboarders on a busy night. During COVID-19, restrictions on the number of day tickets offered has created an increase in demand for night skiing sessions. However, the number of patrons at night still pales in comparison to day skiing numbers.

Twilight skiers and snowboarders can use two lifts for two lit runs and the terrain park.

Apparently Solitude and Snowbasin have had to deal with people totally unwilling to adhere to mask usage. Meaning to the point of having to forcibly remove someone from the property. Can't tell from the article whether the issues were indoors or outdoors. Have read of an incident in the northeast where someone refused to wear a mask indoors and was ultimately escorted off the resort by police.

My sense is that there are GMs everywhere are working with the media to make it clear before the holiday weekend that mask usage is critical and they will not tolerate ugliness to their staff. Fox 13 checked with a few other resorts in Utah for the article.

Solitude Mountain Resort put out social media messaging showing support for their employees over the weekend regarding mask compliance.

“Solitude does not tolerate guests who are disrespectful or combative toward our staff,” a statement read. “It has been apparent that we need to remind some people in our community to treat our staff with respect and kindness.”

Mayhew says it’s not a specific incident or the frequency of incidents that prompted the statement but purely wanting to support her staff.

“Most people are great, but we got a few that are a real challenge,” said Mayhew. “We have had to remove a few people from our property who weren’t in a position to comply with our rules.”
. . .
Ratchford [GM Snowbasin] says that some people came to the resort simply to challenge the mask mandate with no interest of wanting to get on the slopes. A few people have had to be removed from the property.

“We have a policy up here and we’ve had to do some additional conflict resolution training with our employees and for the Snowbasin brand. We’re nice, nice, nice; patient, patient, patient and then we stop,” said Ratchford. “Those are jarring conversations because sometimes being reasonable and having a logical conversation just, you’re not able to have that.”

Both Mayhew and Ratchford want to emphasize that issues with masks are few and far between, but they’ve still happened. They want to remind everyone that employees are following the COVID-19 protocols in place.

That doesn't mean I'm not yelling at people in the locker rooms. The lifelines are safe, being manned by the lifties who seem generally to be enforcing things. The locker rooms have signs posted all over and yet there are always folks unmasked. I'm trying to time my arrival and departure so that no one is there, with mixed success. I get that after skiing in the mask, it's all soaked and now you've got to get your boots off and you're grunting and the mask is interfering with you seeing what you're doing, I hate it as well. But not as much as I'd hate being unable to climb stairs the rest of my life. I get back to the car and immediately pull it off and take in nice deep breaths. Really the locker room, which used to be a joy, is the worst part of the day.

Wow, so crazy to me that one would just be unwilling to wear a mask to do a recreational activity..

No crazier than renting skis and heading out on the slopes with no hat, no gloves, no ski pants, and no lesson. That happens all the time in the southeast.

Mask usage at the ski areas/resorts in NC/VA/WV has apparently been decent but certainly not 100%. Just as there are still a few people who go into Sheetz (VA, NC, PA) unmasked in spite of lots of signs and state-wide mask mandates.

True, there are these people everywhere unfortunately. I guess since I very much want our season to stretch into the spring as usual without any closures I take it very personally in wanting everyone to do their part (wearing a mask sure isn't asking much after we’ve been at this all for almost a year..) so we can stay open and skiing!

I’m getting increasingly disgusted with compliance here. People don’t care, and either Vail Resorts isn’t giving their staff backing/training/support to be more forceful about compliance, or.... I don’t know. At this point I would say that maybe 50% of people are complying with mask mandates in lift lines, meaning their mouths AND NOSES are covered. So many uncovered noses....

And don’t get me started on the liftie yesterday who forced us onto a gondola with another unrelated couple. Which is against Vail’s explicit, written guidance on their website.

Is this at Vail itself or one of their other resorts?

We’ve skied at Keystone, Breckenridge and Vail this season (yesterday we were at Vail). I think Breckenridge is doing marginally better than Vail and Keystone at mask compliance. But we were there earlier in the season when presumably they were taking it more seriously. Also, I think Summit County is taking covid more seriously than Eagle County (Keystone and Breck are in Summit; Vail is in Eagle).

We have not and probably will not ski Beaver Creek (Eagle County) this season. We usually splurge on a weekend there because it's just a wee bit too far for a day trip, but I don’t feel like we can do that safely this season on our budget.

Tremblant is using employees that are not working their usual job as mask police. For example I recognized a ski instructor that was wearing the snow school jacket under the "blue" vest. These "mask police" are at every lift, every building, even at the top of the Cabriolet. You can't get near the gondola without encountering about 4 people in the blue vests.

As per their website...it's up to the guests to adhere, or the place could close.

Sunday River is using patrollers, or at least people in patroller jackets. Seems to work a lot better than when jt started with just the lifties. People seem to respect the authority more.

Cataloochee (NC) is using patrollers also. It started with the older patrollers but over the last few weeks has included younger patrollers as well. I definitely can see an increased mask compliance in the lift lines since this policy began in early January.

They should make a public ceremony of cutting up these peoples' passes, and put the video on the website -- sort of like "public caning", LOL. Perhaps public humiliation would increase peer pressure...
I actually saw a liftie stop the lift, walk up to a chair that was not quite yet out of his reach, and demand this guy hand him his pass for non-mask compliance. He then proceeded to walk up to the long line so that everyone could see him, and yelled, “you see this? That’s what I’ll do to your pass if you don’t wear your mask!” And he clipped the guy’s pass. Compliance was nearly 100% for the rest of the day, at least in that line. This was in Sipapu, a tiny resort in Northern NM a few weeks ago.

I know Sipapu....

I think in CO Vail Resorts is counting on the governor not shutting them down. It’s a pretty good bet, he’s averse to any more restrictions on businesses.

Gore has staff at the entrance to the corral and just as you get on the lift- it's sad to see some that pull their masks down once in the corral! Inside they removed all the seating in the cafeteria area. still have 2 back rooms and a lower level locker room available for inside boot-up- Most behave. Although last week a young couple w/baby refused to wear masks, drank their own booze then changed the baby on a table near theirs with Nothing between the baby's butt and the table! GROSS!! They were set up for the day, with carriage, baby toys, baby bag- I reported them to management. Not sure what happened.
Gore requests guests spend no more than 20min inside, they have an announcement that plays non stop.

I like to use the bathroom on the top of straightbrook chair-(inside the old gondola house) I was talking with the cleaner (they sanitize tables as people come and go) while There, a guy yakking on his phone, no mask. I asked if phone chatting was eating. he said he went over to the guy and requested mask on- the guy pulled a candy bar out of his pocket - didn't open it or eat it- just waved it at the employee! Employee told me the lifties/ mask police in lines don't do anything when fights break out between guests asking non maskers to mask up. It's just so rude!

We have signs at my home Mt. "Don't be the reason to end the season- MASK UP"
