What do you use for rock skis?

When conditions are less than ideal, what do you use for rock skis? Are they an old pair you had kicking around? Or did you get something at a swap? What are they and how old?

Be interesting to see what some people don't mind getting banged up.

I have an old pair of Volants that I use for rock skis. They were my regular skis until I got the AC2 this year. My husband skis a pair of Argles that he bought at a swap meet for $25 3 years ago. This year he used them on his first day out and ripped them up. He will not be able to use them even for rock skis now but they did save his Metrons.

Unfortunately, I only have one pair, my K2 Axis XR ($150 on ebay brand new). When I can afford new skis, these will be the rock skis. Conditions were so bad last year, that I refused to get any PTex work done to my bases until I was comfortable with the conditions this year. Good thing, I have managed to put a few more gouges in the bases already, even though conditions are 100% better than last year (no water skiing and only little rocks). I will have to have them worked on before my trip to Utah next month.

Should I be ashamed to say my rock skis would be a pair of 2006 Burnin Luvs?

I don't usually like to waste money on a lift ticket when conditions are really bad, but otherwise I will just go out on my usual skis (but now I have the Luvs as a second best pair I guess it would be them) but tread rather carefully.

I tend to think that you have skis to use, I am not that concerned about resale value, I usually only keep them a few years before upgrading, a minor scrape or two isn't that big a deal to me.

Because of the type of terrain we have here, it hasn't been necessary to have rock skis, but after my trip to Stowe, I see a reason for them. I will likely keep an old pair around for that purpose in the future.

Well, since I let a co-worker borrow my 2002 Rossi Bandit x's, my rock ski will be a pair of 2004 Volkl six stars or my straight Volants...I may choose to use a pair of rentals/demos if I feel it is too bad.

I've got some Rossi Junior 9-X race skis that my husband got for $125 (with bindings) that are terrific skis, but the low price means no guilt if (when) I rock them. Should come in handy this year, huh?

I dislike my old Volant Powerkarves so much I would not want to put them on, even for rock skiing. Too heavy and hurt my knees.
Any suggestions of what skis I should look for to ruin on rocks?
Think cheap. Rock skiing seems to be the going number this year on the east coast. I don't want ruin my Heads iC!160's until ready to buy a new pair (maybe end of season next year, these only have two seasons so far)

I don't have a pair of rock skis right now. We cleaned out the garage this fall and sold the 2 pair I could have used. I guess I'm like Shellski, I don't want ski if its that bad. Also isn't the idea to avoid the rocks:D After this year, though I should have a pair of Rossi Z5's I can use.

No rock skis either, just skiing my ol' volant epics. I've gotten very adept at lifting a foot when I see a rock is coming up. No major scratches to the ptex yet! :p

Although eventually when I do get new skis, I'm not sure if I'll use the volants for Spring (and Dec!! and Jan!! ) skiing, as the slush tends to stick to the steel (more than regular skis?) and make them sluggish.

Y'know, I don't have any rock skis either. I just try to be careful. And that wasn't easy today! LOTS of bare spots.

Just took my 3-plus year old Heads over to the shop for a tune, and they say they look really, really good. So I must be doing something right!
