  • I found SkiDiva and made new friends
  • Got out for my first season since pre-kiddos (Jan-April 2004, which was my first season, incidentally)
  • Made some progress on forward stance
  • Picked up speed!!!
  • Worked on my fear of heights
  • Skied every trail at our local hill (3 of which are black diamond runs I had not skied before)
  • Tried the easy bumps a few times
  • Made some new ski buddies
  • Figured out how to ski in crud/fresh manmade blowing right on you
  • Survived a partially torn ACL and skied again this season!! :yahoo:
  • Skied at Okemo for the 1st time
  • WILL be taking my first trip off the East Coast for skiing and get to meet a bunch of wonderful divas in the process!!!

I had a lot I wanted to accomplish this season. Didn't manage all of it, but I'm pretty happy with how far I've come. :D

This was my first whole season (I learned and skied 5 times last year)and I went from only being able to do short, easy greens (even then not without falling a lot) to feeling confident that I could pick any random blue trail on the map. Now, sometimes it turns out that that particular blue is a bit too bumpy or otherwise hard for me (that was the case at Whistler especially), but it's a great feeling knowing that I'll at least be able to get through it. It was only a couple months ago that I was sure to find out which were the easiest blues at any each resort--I wouldn't just head up to any ol' blue.

I also took my first ski vacation (Whistler), skied Stevens Pass and Crystal Mountain for the first time, found this board and Epicski, and got my first skis!

Can ski parallel all the time now.

Conquered two runs that I had been nervous on in the past.

Bought new skis and boots which allowed me to do the above.

Due to new skis/boots I believe I can one day ski blacks.

This season I:
  1. Skied Alta!!!
  2. Improved at bumps! (Thank you, Mr. QQ!)
  3. Took a spectacular tumble under the lift on a groomer!
  4. Took and landed a baby jump/drop through the woods on my last run at Solitude!!! I've avoided things like this because I've a high school classmate who had a severe spinal injury after going off an inbounds jump at Killi several years ago. And a close friend went off another tiny jump on her "last run of the day" a year ago, landed wrong (aka, probably straight legged), and snapped her ACL. Anyway, I'm superstitious about the "last run," and I wouldn't have gone this way had I known what was ahead. Once I found myself "flying, " I quickly took some tips I picked up from the SLC divas earlier that week re: whoopdeedoos, applied them, and coasted to a safe landing. It's good to know I know have this skill in my bag of tricks when I need it.

Oh, and:
Started brown-bagging my own PBR's into the lodge :eyebrows:

LUSH! :becky:

1. Met my goal of 60+ days for the 2nd year in a row.
2. Beat hubby at least 3 of 4 runs for the last 3 weeks of Wednesday night racing.
3. Took some SPECTACULAR falls and survived without major injury, although my race skis didn't fare as well.
4. Had a few "best bump runs ever" on my Auras.
5. Helped my Thursday night team place 1st in the Gold bracket (our first podium)!
6. Placed 3rd in the Downhill against some seriously fast chix.

Hopefully I'll be able to add:
7. Got to CO for the first time since 2001!!

Learnt the difference between skidding, pushing & carving turns.
Managed to ski some moguls vaguely properly for the first time ever - very exciting !
Made first steps in overcoming my fear of steep, chopped up terrain and skiing in white-out conditions.
Was picked as back marker for the first time by our guide friend - quite an honour, made me feel v. proud and consequently skied much better than ever before

Finally got to attend (Crescent Ski Council) Steamboat Race Camp starting my season right

"placed" all race weekends

participated in "Women On Wednesday" program at Cataloochee and so met new fun people to ski with as well as finetuning my skiing

Bought first new skis in five years - WOW, how responsive!

Experienced Okemo's Women's Alpine Adventures - fantastic - pushed me outside my "comfort zone"! ..... which linked me to the Divas!

Met and skied with about a dozen divas, joined and love sharing my favorite subject!

exceeded my goal of 40 ski days: 43 -would have been more if our NC slopes hadn't closed early : (

Ski soooo much better than I started the season and so enjoy it soooo much more!!!

Well, I got my butt back on the slopes after 11-12 years!!

I learned why skis are shaped now! <perhaps I'm still missing the ease of my old straights though!>:loco:

While I didn't get to ski much this season due to a late start, I didn't fall! :yahoo:

I realized you can't turn a shaped ski the same way you turn a straight ski!

I bought new boots, new skis for me and the dbf, and loads of great ski gear. :race:

I now have a season pass for next year, so I can ski *free* anytime I want. :ski3:

I found SkiDiva.com. This has to be the most important <aside from the actual skiing> of them all. :hail: Without you ladies, I would have been even more overwhelmed than I was already with learning about the new style gear <new to me, not to you>. Thank you for that.

Hmmm, I only started skiing in mid-Jan, but here are some accomplishments/observations:

Downhill skiing is fun!!!:ski2: Never would have done it if it weren't for that first free lesson.

Taking lessons was the smartest thing I ever did, otherwise, I never would have stuck with it

Steep is relative...on my 1st "real" lesson, after a few green evaluation runs, my instructor took me to the top (our blue). When he disappeared from sight after three turns, I about died. But, after about 1.5 months, I was skiing blacks and was ready to do a "double black" my last time out. It all starts out the same, one turn at a time.

When you find your skis turning radius, it is a sublime and exquisite feeling...I remember the first time I found mine...a true woohoo moment:yahoo:

How come that stupid bimbo at the t-bar can't put it on anyone properly? I'm tired of bruises on the back of my thighs/knees.

I never knew that ski language could rival golf language. Good thing my instructor was an old navy guy and didn't have a problem with all the words spewing forth from my mouth.

I like the equipment that I bought this year, but I know that out there, in a few years, I am going to find that perfect ski and that moment will feel orgasmic. (OMG, OMG:becky: )

I am so thankful to have found Divas because it gave me a ton of information and provided support as I was starting out.

The first time I put on the skis and came down the hill, I could totally feel what the equipment wanted to do...and if you can trust your equipment and relax, it makes it much easier.

I no longer curl my toes like I used to when I was first learning.

Raccoon eyes/face are totally uncool and from now on, I will always carry sunscreen with me when I'm skiing.

While alot of my students are boarders and I think that's cool, I really dislike them because of how they come flying down the hills and scare the crap out of me:mad2:

All my XC skiing really paid off big time...because I could easily ski 10K regularly, I never had any soreness or fitness issues while I was learning to downhill.

That retiring from coaching, while somewhat bittersweet, has been awesome and I have had a perfect winter. But I might have to return to coaching to support my new habit.

Skiing with my daughters is fun, but it's even better when we each bring a friend and can go our own ways.

I am a gear whore...no matter what sport I am in.

I really want to meet up with some divas someday and do some really hardcore skiing...and maybe some yodeling also:fear:

:blah: Guess that's it for now

After starting in Mid-Feb, here's what I've done so far this year...

After 10 years, I'm skiing blues again.

I took two group lessons that were actually private cause I was the only one who showed up and was well worth the $90 for 3 hours. (afternoon mid-week)

I bought quality equipment that has made a huge difference.

I got my DH on the mountain (only he's turned to the evil side:p ) and he can't complain about the time I spend on the hill.

I've spent 27 days on the hill so far and hopefully will break 35 before the close of the season.

I'm had fun each and every time I've gone out.

I got the kids out and skiing.

I've met a wonderful, supportive and informative community in The Ski Diva that has reignited my love of the sport.

Thanks for a wonderful season.

I uh... didn't do so well. My main goal this season was to not get hurt. And I managed to need another knee surgery and didn't even wreck or anything to earn the injury. Lame.

Ah, well. Unfortunately, in the process I didn't really push myself at all - trying to be conservative. I think in 35-ish days of skiing, I fell twice. I guess we can call that an accomplishment - I did manage to ski pretty smoothly and such.

I did learn to ski reverse camber/reverse sidecut skis pretty well. And felt that I was skiing more two-footed through crud, which made me feel extra stable at speed. So that was good.

And the large majority of the days I skied were powder days. So that was fun too.

And uh.... hopefully I got that knee surgery out of the way so I can have a nice safe bike season now that the torn meniscus has been cleaned up!

Oooh! You're my hero! Maybe there's hope for me yet...

Lets do it on Sunday!!! I haven't either.....

Me?

-I'm not a crasher. When it happens, it's hilarious, and baaad. I learned to get out of my comfort zone, and had some fantastic wipeouts, laughed my way back into my bindings every single time.

-GLADES. OHMYGOSH.

-A traumatic experience left me pole-less and scared of a certain area at Meadows, I got over it the other day!
