What did you accomplish this season?

I'll start off.

  • What was crazy steep to me in previous seasons is no biggie. Yeah!
  • My short radius turns are more consistent and balanced.
  • I can turn off my type A-ness and just enjoy skiing without a goal in mind. This was a biggie for me. In fact, since I've been able to ski again, I haven't worked on anything...I've just had a blast!
  • I can land a 360 in one direction, just not the other direction yet! :eyebrows:

I had a goal of skiing over 1,000,000 vertical feet and made that last week. I also wanted to ski my age in days. I have 61 days and only need 4 more days to make my goal. Wahoo!

I CONQUERED THE MOUNTAIN!!!! :yahoo:
I met Divas! :cheer:
I'm getting more confidence!
I was able to ski WITHOUT Mr. NVG (thank you Marigee, Nanny, SkiNurse & Robyn!)
I drove MYSELF to the mountain! :yahoo:
I got my first pair of REALLY FAT skis! :becky:
I'm not done yet... :yahoo:

I began to understand what is really meant by angulation and carving.

I skied off-piste

I skied the terrain park

I skied without the DH, drove myself to the mountain, met internet ski buddies and had a fantastic time.

I had more fun skiing this year than ever before. :D

I learned how to carve my turns instead of skidding them, and how to make different shaped turns.

I made a lot of progress in shifting my weight forward and keeping my hands out front.

I learned how to ski switch and make 360s on snow.

I skied tree and bump runs at Big Sky.

I skied powder and crud at Stowe and Big Sky.

I found a great coach at Okemo and another at Big Sky.

I was really happy with my skis, boots, gear, and other equipment.

I had a lot of fun with my kids at our local mountain and at Smugger's Notch.

I skied all Winter despite my health condition.

I made lots of new friends, mostly Divas, and some Bears too

I had a ton of fun!

Great lists, ladies. Ski Now's is extra inspiring for me as an intermediate.

So these aren't necessarily accomplishments, but they're ski related things that occurred and seem worth listing.

I met divas, and lots of them!

I skied (albeit really briefly) outside the Midwest, on a real mountain. In the past, mountains for me meant hiking, climbing or camping.

I had a blast demoing next season's skis.

I joined the busted ligament club.

I found my perfect tune.

I experienced the bliss that is powder.

I skied in November.

Probably more to come.

30+ days (at least 20 touring days)

More powder days than not

Skied a bunch of new stuff: Suicide chute, Kessler, Hogum, and Argenta

Joined the Solitude Sunday club as much as possible - so much fun!

Met and skied with Divas!

Increased my aggressiveness

Started brown-bagging my own PBR's into the lodge :eyebrows:

I got my first pair of new skis in 8 years and LOVE them.

I bought said skis ALL BY MYSELF without DH's input.

I fell madly in love with skiing thanks to said skis.

I skied more difficult terrain and more black diamonds thanks to said skis.

My daughter and I had our first mother-daughter ski day.

And as a mother, have to add this: my boys are now members of the black diamond club.

Yee haw!!!

Let's see...

I found TheSkiDiva.com and became acquainted with an amazing group of women.

I skied in Utah for the first time.

I skied in a foot of powder for the first time.

I improved greatly with my technique--carving turns better, linking shorter turns

I got my boots so dialed in the last weekend of my season that I can't wait for next season.

I overcame the physical limitations (and partially overcame the psychological limitations) that my arthritic knees have presented that kept me off the slopes over the last couple of years and had more fun skiing this year than I ever have. It's a great feeling to have some confidence in my body again. I know there are some things (like hucking off a cliff or launching off a jump in the terrain park  ) that I'll never be able to do, but I'm fine with it.

It was a fantastic season indeed. I had a ton of fun, met a bunch of divas and learned a ton!

-I gave some technique advice to a friend and then witnessed the happy results on the very next run!

-I made it down my first double black. It wasn't pretty, but I was able to make some genuine turns.

-Invested in an AT setup. Next winter: get some backcountry/touring lessons!

  1. Got past the "head" issues from my accident.
  2. Overcame the lack of physical conditioning resulting from sitting on my butt all summer.
  3. Skied less days than in past years (averaged 69 days beginning 2003 onwards) by skiing 60 days, BUT this was more than my goal of 45-50. The ski area opened two weeks later and I missed quite a few days due to health issues with my dogs.
  4. Skied less vertical feet than past years (averaged 1.56 million since 2003 onwards) by skiing only 1.4 million this year, but that was WAY more than my goal of .5 - 1 million.
  5. Learned to ski powder almost as well as groomers due to my new skis.
  6. Improved my "# of linked turns" in the steeps from about 3-5 to around 17-20. YAY!! This was due to two tips: first was "walk your pole plants down the hill"; second was keep your shoulders parallel to the incline of the hill. I did far less "shopping for turns" and more "just turn NOW".
  7. Finished 43rd of 7000 passholders in the resort's Top Vertical stats. Goal was to finish in the top 100. (Last year I finished in the top 25 even though my season was shortened due to the accident.)
  8. Learned how to polish my edges when tuning my skis and also began scraping and brushing fanatically. This dramatically improved the speed of my skis as the winter progressed. I also began to FEEL the impact on my turns from having skis that were well tuned. I had more confidence in my edge hold when I turned on hard snow, which meant I hesitated less and turned more smoothly.
  9. Worked on NOT lifting my inside leg anytime I was on groomers. Tried to "roll" from edge to edge. Still working on this. You can see my latent "hup" (Austrian for "hop" from back in the day when I learned to ski) occasionally, but I'm working on it. I learned to be more comfortable facing straight down the fall line and trusting my skis to turn.
  10. Improved my fog skiing skills. Learned to trust my memory of a slope and the feedback in my feet.

I learned to love bumps!

I skiied my first (but hopefully not last) double black!

I became comfortable skiing in more than a couple of inches of powder.

I became comfortable skiing black runs regularly.

I actually started seeking out terrain that isn't groomed instead of only going down it as a last resort.

I pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little.

Will pass 70 days this season (most ever for me).
Highlands Bowl
Super steeps
Hucked stuff - never thought I'd say that
Got good at bumps - always gotta get better though
Had some Backcountry adventures (more to come!)
Got more comfortable in the air

Got a lot more days in than last year, but still not nearly enough.
(Going from 3hrs on snow to 16 days is a big improvement. But I am aiming for 30 days next year, which will continue to be very challenging with the little kids. I can do it! Go me! I had no idea how much harder it would be with a toddler and a preschooler.)

Found my legs again, after a year off.

Continued to improve at steeps and drop-in entrances.

Learned to laugh at myself when I have a crappy day, instead of being al angry that I sucked.
