Waxing new skis?

When you get a new pair of skis how many coats of wax do you put on it before you ski. I just recently got Attiva AC3's. I got them ground at the shop they put one coat of wax on, I then put three more....my friend said I should do like five coats but he was a racer. I was thinking that was a little excessive what do you girls think?

Honestly, my last pair of skis I purchased, I didn't apply any wax. The factory tune/wax has been pretty good to me. I have 8 days on the skis with no real complaints. Though hubby did buy me some rub on wax so I can remedy it when it starts to feel slow.

Unless they're race skis, a coat or two should be fine.

I have the shop structure them if they are not structured, and wax them. Then I wax them again. And since I wax every other day I ski, it really doesn't take too long for them to be pretty perfect.

This might sound funny... but since I just bought my first pair of skis... what type of wax do you use/recommend? And how often?

If you really want to make waxing easy, get Hertel Hot Sauce. It's an excellent "all-temp" wax that works really well for everything except really wet warm slop and super cold "squeeky snow". Frequency of waxing depends on where and how often you ski. For east coast/midwest skiers on ice and man-made snow, 1-5 ski days seems to be the norm. For westerners on softer natural snow, 5-10 ski days, maybe? Basically wax is needed whenever your skis no longer look smooth, shiny and "soapy". Any sign of "hairy" or "white" means wax now!
