Volkl vs. K2

Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase some new skis and wanted some information on the Volkl AC3 and the K2 Lotta luv. I was able to demo the Volkl's this weekend and really like them - felt completely in control at all times. The K2's were out of commission due to faulty demo bindings and several pending law suits.

The guy at the demo shop said that I'd have more fun on the K2's, but I'm hesitant to purchase something I haven't tried, especially since I liked the Volkl's so much. Any insight anyone can give to these two skis would be much appreciated.

thanks!

If it were me, I'd wait to demo to see what I liked before I made any decision. Of course, if the AC3s blew you away, that's a different story. I understand they're terrific skis.

That said, here's something posted by Elangirl comparing the AC3s and K2s. I have no experience with either, so I couldn't say.

The AC3 is an awesome ski--it is a little stiffer and make sure that you are really flexing it into the turn. The K2 ski has a slightly different shape which makes it easier to initiate the turn. Both of those skis would work well with Eastern hard pack.

I have tried them both, but I am still waiting to try the AC3 again on my home turn to get a better comparison of the two.

The AC3 seemed to actually weigh less, not a good decission factor, but makes carrying them to the car easier:smile: . I really liked them both and wouldn't think twice about getting either. The K2s may be a bit "damper", some people like it, some don't, I'm used to the K2 feel, so it did feel comfortable. I felt the AC3 got a bit chattery on the cuncky crud going straight, but they turned just fine. That could be a factor of being on the wrong size or that I was skiing on marbles. Like I said earlier, I want to try them on my home turf for a better comparison.

The K2s didn't really like the ice and the review I read said the AC3s are better on the ice, they lost their grip. However, I did find that when I didn't try to fight the ski, it did much better.

Both had great transitions from hard pack to powder and back.

Considering the price of both, I would definitely wait and try the K2s before making a decission. Unless of course you find a screaming deal on either, then I would say get it.

Good Luck, have fun testing & Let us know how it turns out.

I bought the AC3s this season as I think Volkls are fantastic. I love them, though the 163s are a tiny bit long for me (wish they came in 160 cm length). I find the K-2s too heavy, and I won't buy a ski that has the word "luv" in it at my age (47) although I now own a pair of Volkl Kaya twin tips.

Al's Ski Barn (www.untracked.com) has some AC3s left for ~ $600/pr. which is a good price.

Hello from over the pond
I wondered if anyone had tried the Attiva S4 or S5 ?
I am considering buying a new pair of skis. I tried the K2 Burnin' Luvs and after initially finding them 'a bit different' , I really liked the stable feel of them. We were in Winter Park and I used them on the moguls, chopped up snow and piste. I found them better at speed. I didn't find them quite so easy to carve at slow speeds. I have been skiing Atomic C9s since I started skiing a few years ago. I have skied 12weeks. We ski mostly in Europe. I feel I need some skis to 'up my game a bit'. I was considering trying the Volkls before deciding on the K2s. I like carving and short turns. I would ski powder - if there were some!!
Thanks!

Yep. I demo'd the Attiva AC3 and the Attiva S5 in December. The AC3 was a good all mountain ski, with emphasis on the on-piste. Good edge grip, and makes very nice carving turns.
The Attiva S5 is a great carving ski--awesome edge grip and will hold a line like no other ski I've used. Short turns, medium turns, long turns, doesn't matter. Stable at speed. Very lively, and responsive (typical Volkl, I'm told). Just soft enough with a nice sweet spot so you won't get thrown around if you make a mistake.
Lightweight, too, so they are easy to carry around and don't drag your feet down while on the lifts.

Oh, I loved the S5 so much that I bought a pair on the spot. I couldn't see going back to my old skis after that. :o
