Volkl Fuego length

HI - I am getting pumped up for ski season and finally getting ready to make my move on buying the Fuego. I am going to snag a deal on the 08 model while I still can.

I was getting ready to purchase the 161 cm and then doubted myself on length. I am considering the 168 cm. I would appreciate all your expert diva opinions.

I am almost 40, an expert carver on fast groomed trails, ex-racer who jumped on a Nastar course last year and got excited about it. But I also ski with my 7 and 9 year old on blues so I need a ski that will let me relax sometimes too.

I am 5'6", about 180 lbs. Very strong.

What do you think - 161 or 168?

Mmmmm. I like the Fuegos. Awesome skis. I would actually go 168 if I got them, and I am about the same size as you. Several of the ladies on here are trying to talk me into 170 Auras, but I'm thinking I would only go that long for groomers/racing.

If it's going to be the "ice skate" of your quiver, go with the 161. If it's going to be your only ski, go with the 168.

I demoed the 154 and the 161 and found a rather large difference in their behavior. I image there will be an equal difference in the 161 vs. the 168 as well. At your stated weight and skiing style, the 161 will be too turny for hanging with the kids or hitting the Nastar course (we're very similar). Or, for more relaxed skiing but similar performance, try the Nordica Firefox.

My review of them is here

FWIW I'm of a similar height and weight, but an intermediate who's fond of speedy cruising, and likes shorter, turny skis. I generally ski 158s, I demoed the 154 Fuego and fell in love with it.

Interesting... the ski sales men I have talked to all think the 161 is best, even when I tell them what I weigh. My husband says I am 5'5 1/2" not 5'6" which is probably true!! The 168 would be above my head in length (but weight is more relevant). I do like shorter turns when I free ski so the 161 may be better.

Num, I think I'd have a hard time on the 154 since I am used to at least 160.

Wish I could demo these different lengths but I would then miss my chance to snag a deal on the 08 models. By the time I demo them, I am sure I would be forced to buy the 09.

Going to sleep on it and hope a definite length decision hits me tomorrow!

Go ahead and get the 161, you'll still love them.

When you get hooked on racing again (and you will ), you'll just need to add to your quiver.

I decided on the 161. If go crazy on the race thing (you know I just might ), then I'll just have to add to my quiver.

Happy 40th Birthday to me - the skis are being delivered tomorrow. I kind of planned that!

Cute! Thanks num.

Hubby just surprised me with a Mackinac Island trip for Friday and Saturday - it is turning out to be a pretty good birthday so far.
