Utah 7-Day Adventure

Shelbyr (fellow ski diva) and myself just finished a 7 day ski trip to Utah. We started off in Ogden and skied Powder Mountain and Snowbasin. We did find a few powder shots at Powder Mountain but it involved some hiking. I definitely want to go back when they have some fresh snow! At Snowbasin we had to ski the Grizzly (the Mens Alpine course for 2002 Olympics).

We have a friend who is an instructor at Deer Valley so we headed to Park City and spent a day tearing up the groomers at Deer Valley.

We then moved on to SLC and skied Snowbird and Alta. We had great powder at Snowbird and Alta. We even had a day of sun at Alta. There is truly nothing better than skiing fresh powder at Alta and having crystal blue skies.

It was a fantastic trip! We even topped it off with a trip to the Porcupine…tried the nachos and stacked enchiladas…they have FANTASTIC beer! The Porcupine would do a good business in Boise.
Here are some pics from our trip:

Glad to hear that you had such a great time here! Snowbasin is so much fun -- I wish I got up that way more. And you're Alta pow shots are awesome! Looks like you were right off the EBT (East Baldy Traverse) between Sugarloaf and Collins, right?

And, you went to Porcupine! Did you try the Wasatch Raspberry Wheat? That's my fav. on tap. Anyway, sounds like you did your UT trip right.

Yep, that pow shot is between Collins and Sugarloaf. The traverse was closed all day Friday so it was untouched first thing Saturday morning. We spent most our time in Catherine’s Area. We hiked to the boundary line on the far skier’s right and skied in the trees over there. Next time we come down to Alta we need to get together with some of you locals! :eyebrows: I am definitely going to bring my skins next time, the back of Catherine’s looked amazing on Saturday.

Shelby r got the Raspberry Wheat at the Porcupine and let me have a taste…it was really good. I tried the Apricot...it was also good

That area is called Rocky Point and it's fabulous! If you bring your skins next time, I'd be happy to show you some of my favorite stashes.

We definitely had a great time. I wish I was still there! That last day at Alta was amazing. Great snow and we could see! I can't wait to go back. All the resorts had a little something different and I liked them all, but I do think I'm an Alta girl! We went to the Porcupine on our very last day, after that great pow day at Alta, and none of us could finish the half order of nachos! Oh but they were good! I wish I could find some of that Raspberry Wheat beer down here in Idaho. Like IdahoSkiGirl said, next year we'll be bringing our backcountry gear. I hope to start buying some backcountry stuff this spring and fall. There's nothing like having a huge mountain all to yourself! :yahoo:

Sounds like a plan! Some people that were hiking in front of us dropped into that area southeast of the Supreme chairlift and seeing all that steep and deep made me drool! Shelby and myself were talking on the way home about how SLC is really not a bad drive from Boise and we need to start going down more often...even for a long weekend. Shelby is going to start buying backcountry gear this summer, so you will have to take us out :becky: ...if we can keep up!

Porcupine is in my hood. I remember when it was struggling for business, now we avoid the winter crowds as DH refuses to line up.

It is so interesting to see Utah through visitor's eyes and I'm glad you had such a great time. I have lived in this state for almost 40 years---when I was exiled here as a senior in high school. I was isolated socially that year--but discovered the mountains, skiing, and the desert. I skipped a few days of high school and explored the terrain you enjoyed on your Utah trip. Our gear was awful, but the mountain was ours. Today's crowds just blow my mind.

Since arriving in Zion, except for a love affair with Alaska and McKinley for a few years, I have become a Utahn, even marrying a fifth generation Utah native. I have played in the mountains and deserts in all seasons. I have put up with all of the cultural/political nonsense (nuff said---but you locals will know).

My kids have the mountains in them. Today, one son boarded pow at Brighton before work (at B-ton) and another son boarded in the snow in Jacison before he headed to his chef gig at Teton Mountain Lodge. My daughter lived at worked at Brighton and married a volunteer ski patroller/guide she met there.

And I am working on returning to my ski bum roots where it started oh so many years ago. I am mountain hosting and trying to figure out how to take next winter off. And I want to visit Chile in August.

Even old ski gals have to chase a dream.

dloveski, thank you for the post. My family feels the same way about the Boise area. It has changed a lot...some for the better....some for the worse.

ski now work later, if you ever want to come to Idaho let us know

We did have a great trip. The only down side was a 3 hour drive down from Alta...that was not fun!
