US Manufactured Skis?

It can be misleading. DPS has one factory and headquarters in SLC yet their foundation line is made in China according to this article: newschoolers online article

It’s an interesting question. The non-tariffed components piece is hard to make any assumptions about. Even in materials that the US does have strong internal supply chains for, we still import a portion.

And almost no domestic manufacture of bindings, I’d wager. Kneebindings were made in the US but I don’t think they’re still operating.

That article is from 7 years ago.

When I toured the DPS factory in 2019, as I rermember all the skis for adults were being made in SLC. The factory had recently been expanded. The skis for kids were still being made in China.

The goal was for DPS to do all manufacturing in the SLC facility by 2020. My friend who also was part of the tour did a trip report.

I don't know what actually happens as of 2025 for DPS skis.

I have been planning to buy skis for next season and was just thinking of the tariff impact potential. Maybe by next season, the tariff issue will be in the rearview(I hope).

Any skis can be made, but what about the components that go into them.
For example I sell architectural wood doors. These are doors for schools, hotels. They are a much better quality than your household stuff.

But the veneer and those molded skins all come from the states. So they are subject to tariff coming into Canada. Then the cores, some are cardboard aka honeycomb. Some are pressed particle board and some are actual lumber. Some of these cores are not produced locally either.

Add in the glue to keep the pieces together.

I've been lucky to find a Canadian manufacturer that has a complete Canadian line.

So, for skis....the core material, the titanal, the steel edges, the top sheets, the sinster or p-tex bases. The skis may be "assembled" in the USA, but where do all those parts come from?

The old K2 factory on Vashon Island (WA) is for sale in case anyone wants to start their own brand in the US and doesn't mind the impracticality of manufacturing skis on a ferry served island in Puget Sound.

It's a lovely island, bucolic, kind of like Vermont but with saltwater and whales. A very strange place for a factory.

Also a lot of the overseas manufacturers have American subsidiaries. So the finished good being imported in the US is not being taxed at the retail price, but most likely the manufacturers cost, plus exchange and shipping to the US.

We have import tariffs on products from the US. One company has their price list x 1.40 (for exchange) and another 7% as my cost to the tariff. It should be 25%, but because they are selling to the Canadian sub, the tariffed amount is not the same as what I'm paying.

This is why I decided to buy 2 new pairs of skis and bindings! Had to get them before tariffs took effect. Or at least that's the excuse I used. Just dropped them off at the shop today to get mounted.

From my conversations with DPS this past winter, I believe they don't offer Foundation anymore and are making all of their products in the US.

*It's possible that the Koala collection is still built in China. I'll check with my DPS Guy.

Even though they're made in the US, a lot of the components are from ouside the US.

@Scribble made me demo WNDR skis, I have been skiing them since.
The algae base is from California & the skis are made in SLC.

I'm a huge fan of USA made Voilé skis out of Utah. Sourcing of materials tho -- that's far trickier. And even if the ski is made here, there's nothing stopping these companies from raising prices to make bigger profits. If I was in the market for new skis, I'd been looking hard at season end and buy ASAP.
