Update from Big Sky

We just finished six days of skiing at Big Sky, and are sadly packing up to go home tomorrow. It was the first time in about 20 years I've been able to ski a solid week, and it was amazing how much my confidence level and skills jumped. I took a group lesson our second day here, which had one other person, and then my husband and I did a shared private lesson with a ski diva instructor extraordinaire on Wed. She immediately pointed out that I pronate (I know, I know!), but laughed when I relayed the unfortunate story of our stranded sky gear at our friends flooded sky house in Tahoe, including my custom fit boots and foot beds. Despite rental gear and rampant pronation, I survived, and we finished the week by going up the experts only Challenger lift on Wed and Thurs and then the Lone Peak Tram to the Liberty Bowl today. Over 11,000 feet high and six miles from the Liberty Bowl to the base, it was pretty amazing. Very steep, but incredible views on a clear day like today. I watched a hip young snowboarder flip over several times next to me on the way down, and just kept thinking, stay forward, headlights downhill. I finished the day by doing the Congo run, a single black diamond with tightly packed trees and moguls. DH demurred, but watched from the bottom of the run with our daughter.

Overall Big Sky was amazing, really long runs, huge variety, and basically no lines. We signed our six year old up for half day group lessons most of the week, but they worked out to be private lessons since there were no other kids her age in her group. She made huge progress, and can now get on and off the lift herself, and is starting to make more consistent parallel turns. She also unintentionally went on a black diamond run with us yesterday called No Sweat (bad parents!), but she was fine and was very pleased with herself afterwards when we realized which run we'd done. Unfortunately our three year old was not so interested in skiing this week, unlike last year at Tahoe, but she had fun at the Playhouse, aka the daycare. They have a nice setup there and we had to tear her away when it was time to leave. I highly recommend Big Sky, and would love to find a way to get back there. United had a non-stop flight to Bozeman from San Francisco, and then it's about an hour drive from there, so it's more convenient than I would have imagined. DH had a conference there this week, so we'll have to find another excuse to go back.

I absolutely love Big Sky and Congo is one of my favorite runs there. Glad you had so much fun! Big Sky is a gem among ski resorts. I definately will be going back.

Thanks so much for your trip report--my SO and I are going to Big Sky the end of next month, and now I really can't wait to go!

Do you remember the name of the ski diva instructor you had? I'd love to take a lesson while I'm there.

Ursula Howland is her name, and she's great, she's the instructor who leads many of the instructor certification trainings. Overall the level of instruction seems pretty high there, and the group lessons are also a great deal, since they are often only 2-3 people. It seemed like levels 1-2 have more people in the groups, but not so many at the upper levels. The instructors are not afraid to take you on challenging runs if you describe yourself as a level 7 or above, so you should express your comfort level clearly, but they are also very good at telling you how to do it. And be forewarned, many slopes rated as blue at Big Sky would be black at many resorts. They don't groom any of the slopes rated as black, with exception of one run that they sometimes take a snowcat up on a winch to groom (yes, it's that steep). If you feel up to it, I thought doing the Lone Peak tram ride and skiing down was an amazing experience. My only complaint is that it's not easy to tell which trail is which from the top, since they don't really mark the a different trails down. Being a woman, I asked a more experienced looking person for directions to the single black diamond routes. Marx or Lenin are steep but wide, but you don't want to end up on one of the double black routes down unless you are up to it. DH and I watched as the ski patrol very slowly had to lower a skier who had hurt themselves coming down one of the couloirs. But there is lots of easier terrain as well, and we all had fun cruising down some of the Southern Comfort trails. I've skied in California, Colorado, and British Columbia, and I have to say that Big Sky was my favorite so far.

Ursula has been a Coach for ESA. Everyone Loves Ursula!!!

Until a few years ago, I'd never skied outside of Michigan, now I'm a regular at Abasin and have added a long list of ski resorts from Vermont and Colorado to my Been There, Done That list, with some from WY and MT ready to be added!

Thanks for the great TR!

Ursula is a master coach, I had a lesson with her when I was there in Feb. '08. She's not part of theskidiva.com (to my knowledge) but is part of the EpicSki team. She is a fabulous instructor. I echo what valli said about the small group lessons (which are very reasonably priced) and the lack of grooming. I have not gone to Lone Peak yet because of the difficulty of the trails there but Ursula said she would have taken me but conditions were poor that day. I won't go up there without a guide/coach.

Thanks for all the great info about Ursula! I'll be looking her up while I'm in Montana, for sure.
