We just finished six days of skiing at Big Sky, and are sadly packing up to go home tomorrow. It was the first time in about 20 years I've been able to ski a solid week, and it was amazing how much my confidence level and skills jumped. I took a group lesson our second day here, which had one other person, and then my husband and I did a shared private lesson with a ski diva instructor extraordinaire on Wed. She immediately pointed out that I pronate (I know, I know!), but laughed when I relayed the unfortunate story of our stranded sky gear at our friends flooded sky house in Tahoe, including my custom fit boots and foot beds. Despite rental gear and rampant pronation, I survived, and we finished the week by going up the experts only Challenger lift on Wed and Thurs and then the Lone Peak Tram to the Liberty Bowl today. Over 11,000 feet high and six miles from the Liberty Bowl to the base, it was pretty amazing. Very steep, but incredible views on a clear day like today. I watched a hip young snowboarder flip over several times next to me on the way down, and just kept thinking, stay forward, headlights downhill. I finished the day by doing the Congo run, a single black diamond with tightly packed trees and moguls. DH demurred, but watched from the bottom of the run with our daughter.
Overall Big Sky was amazing, really long runs, huge variety, and basically no lines. We signed our six year old up for half day group lessons most of the week, but they worked out to be private lessons since there were no other kids her age in her group. She made huge progress, and can now get on and off the lift herself, and is starting to make more consistent parallel turns. She also unintentionally went on a black diamond run with us yesterday called No Sweat (bad parents!), but she was fine and was very pleased with herself afterwards when we realized which run we'd done. Unfortunately our three year old was not so interested in skiing this week, unlike last year at Tahoe, but she had fun at the Playhouse, aka the daycare. They have a nice setup there and we had to tear her away when it was time to leave. I highly recommend Big Sky, and would love to find a way to get back there. United had a non-stop flight to Bozeman from San Francisco, and then it's about an hour drive from there, so it's more convenient than I would have imagined. DH had a conference there this week, so we'll have to find another excuse to go back.
