Twin Tip Advice Needed

amanda

Ski Diva Extraordinaire
As much as I love my Auras I am looking to pick up a pair of true twin tips on the cheap. I'm looking for something a little softer than my Auras to use for those days when I'll mostly be skiing bumps and playing in the park. So I'm looking for some opinions from all you twin tippers. I'm not going to spend the money to demo because I'm looking for a deal and the cost of demoing will increase my expenditure by nearly 1/3. I've found great deals on the following skis and would love to hear if any of you ladies have skied these:
Rossignol Trixie
K2 Missdemeanor

If you can recomend any other twin tips that you're real fond of that would also be great.

I know that there are some ladies on here that are very fond of their Volkl Pearls but being a Volkl ski there just aren't the same kind of deals out there for the Pearls.

LOVE my Dynastar Marie Martinods. I got them on eBay for $200 (including bindings) and they can be scored for even cheaper now. I bought mine from snowdealsnow based upon the recommendation of MaineSkiLady and I can't complain (he still has some in stock, too). They're a nice ski, great price, and a lot of fun. Dimensions: 112-78-102. I think they're essentially the same as the Dynastar She's Trouble, just different graphics.

Sorry I don't have any advice on the skis you asked about. Good luck with your decision!

If you want a pair of twin tips for bumps, DON'T get a symmetrical twin tip...get something with narrower tails than tips. (This leaves out the Pearls, Ledge, Fischer Addict, Line Anthem, etc). Also, stick with 80mm waist twins.

There were a few skiers in my mogul camp that were on Misdemeanors and loved them, and they were fantastic in the bumps. Same with the K2 PE. Another twin tip that is good for bumps is Dynastar's Nothing But Trouble, it has narrower tails and at 80mm wide, is "narrow enough" (relatively speaking, of course) and soft enough for bumps. I just saw some of those on Ebay for around $200, or perhaps less than that. I would go to Ebay for twin tips.....there are a lot on sale there, through individuals and Ebay Stores. I demoed the Salomon Mai Tai at mogul camp and also found that one capable of what you want to do.

Another great choice! I've dealt with Snow Deals Now as well, and they are a superior Ebay store. He has Dynastar twin tips, the Martinods, the Nothing But Troubles, etc., so check them out!!!

My Harts are for sale in the DOD section, too.

So with a little more research the Trixies are out of the running as they are rated as a beginner to intermediate ski.
Vanhoskier - Thanks for all the advice! So helpful! It didn't occur to me that a symetrical twin tip would not work in the bumps so thanks for the headsup.
Volkl Girl - Your Harts a little too fat at the waste for what I'm looking for, but thanks!
Severine - I will definitely check out the Marie Martinods.

Next question is size. I'm 5'3" and weigh about 125 lbs and right now I ski a 156. I know that the twin tips will ski a bit shorter. But how much shorter? The Missdemeanors only come in a 154 or a 164. I'm thinking the 154 is going to be too short but I'm worried that a 164 is too much length if I want to use them primarily as a bump ski. Help please!

I ski the PE's in a 159. It's basically stiffer and a bit wider than the Missdemeanor. I chose the length to help me turn a bit easier in bumps and glades since I wanted to learn to ski them.

I'm 5'5" and 130, I demoed the 164 PE and that would be fine for me as well. I definitely think the 164 would be appropriate for you in the MD. I've only heard good things about them, I love my PE's in the bumps, nice pop and they are a ton of fun.

Backcountry and Sierra Skis have some good deals on bindings at the moment when you make your decision : )

I just bought the Missdemeanors in 154. They do come in a 159, (I demo'd that length) and a 164 too, or is it that the place you tried them doesn't have them? I stuck with the 154 since that's what I have now, and wanted to do trees.

I do luv them.

So I think I've settled on the Missdemeanors unfortunately the deal I found was for the 2008 models and they are out of the 159 which is my preferred length. So I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for the prices on the 2009 to come down a bit. Oh it's so hard to be patient. Thanks for all the advice!

Some great prices out there on the K2 Public Enemy! (159cm.) :eyebrows: https://www.evogear.com/skis/k2-public-enemy-2008.aspx

I am about the same size as you, and have the PE in a 159cm. A nice all mountain twin tip. Fun in bumps, and will do tight trees and light powder.

Very tempting...that's a good deal. There is also a pair of 159 PEs on Ebay super cheap right now. I'm worried that the PE is a little wide in the waist. I'm afraid that the PE with a 85mm waist will come too close to overlapping with my Auras with a 94mm waist.

Lori K - You own both of these skis don't you? How would you compare the two? Do you think they fill different niches in your quiver?

I just want something a little softer with a narrower waist for days when I know that I will most likely only be skiing bumps, groomers, and the park or when the snow conditions leave a lot to be desired.

Yep, I have the 163cm Aura. The funny thing is, if you put the 159cm PE and the 163cm Aura back to back, they are the same length!

Anyway, the PE and the Aura serve different purposes. There is some overlap, but each has a different feel.

The Aura is a "serious" ski. It wants to cut through crud, plow through powder, rail on edges out on the groomers and do it all fast (or faster.) I definitely have fun on this ski, but it also has the Volkl attitude, and rewards good technique.

The PE is a "fun" ski. My husband also has PEs in 179cm, and calls them the "crack bunnies". :D Fun ski, turns on a dime, bounces over crud and slop, and encourages you to take that little jump over on the side of the trail. Nice in bumps, holds a decent edge on hardpack, and forgiving enough at the end of a long ski day.

The two skis will cover much of the same terrain, but each has a different feel while doing it. Both are pretty lightweight and easy to carry around.

I've also got the Aura 156.... love them, but they are stiff and not much fun for me in bumps or the trees. So, I got the Roxy Broomstix and am totally in love. They are soft and bouncy and so much fun. I got the 155 because they are a bump/tree ski for me - and i love them that way. I demo'd the 162 as well, and it just wasn't doing it for me (5'5, 105lbs). REI's got them on clearance right now for $309. Don't get last years (the white ones), this years are so much better.

Thanks Lori K that's really helpful.
I'm still feeling very torn. :noidea: I was talking to a guy at Christy's last night and he seems to think that the Missdemeanors are very "squishy" (his word not mine). He also told me that K2 measures their skis based on the effective edge. This would explain why Lori K's 163 Aura and 159 PE are about the same size. So now I'm worried that the Missdemeanors will be too soft and the 159 PE will be too long. :frusty:Damn you Christy's Sport guy! I might just end up caving and spending the $ to demo, although I guess I'm out of luck on demoing the PE.

I wouldn't worry about the 159 Pe's being too long at all..never been an issue for me. Like I said, I demoed the 164's as well and they were fine...I demoed in about 8 inches of wet heavy snow after I had only been skiing a couple of months. The only time the extra length of the tips and tails comes into play is in fresh snow when you want it.

Granted we don't get a ton of fresh snow here in the East, but I've had them in a 12+" snow be it light to heavy wet stuff, never had turning issues. Granted they don't turn as instantly as say my Fuegos...but they're not supposed to! Trust your ability, you will ski them just fine no matter which you choose.

Like veggielasagna, I also demo'd the PE in a 164. It was fine as well, although I think there might have been a burr or something on one edge of the pair I demo'd.
The 159 is a fun and forgiving ski, and feels shorter than the Aura due to the twin tips.

I guess my concern with the 159 is not so much that I won't be able to ski them, because I feel pretty confident that I could. But DBF pointed out that it seems odd to buy a bump ski that is quite a bit longer than my powder ski, and I have to admit he has a point.

(Your powder skis are too short! :decision: )

:duck:

Really, though-- think of it this way. The difference between the 156cm Aura and the 163cm Aura (or PE, if you like) is 8 cm. Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?
It's LESS than 3 inches. Three inches isn't really "quite a bit longer" if you look at the big picture.
