Tuckerman's Ravine

I'm thinking about planning my first trip to Tuckerman's (NH), and wondering if anyone has been up yet, if it looks like there will still be snow in late May. Please let me know if you have any tips or good stories.

Here's your info website:

Also check Alpine Zone's forum, a lot of them make the trip. And remember, it's Tuckerman Ravine, no "s"!!
I have not yet done it, timing has never been right, but my son has and loved it (several years ago). DH and a friend of ours plan to do it, timing and weather permitting. Good info on that site about how to pack up for the hike up.

Thanks so much! I found a different site, and printed out some maps and guides, but that site looks great, with lots of user input. It has me really excited and a little scared. Let me know if you do it. It seems like a pretty hard trip to plan ahead for, just need to be ready when the conditions are right. I hope it happens for us this year, if not it'll become my skiing holy grail.

That looks way cool! A little scary, but not so bad if you do it with an experienced group.

It's an absolute pilgrimage out here. A "rite of spring!"

We were hoping to head up this weekend, but the friend in the group who's been up before is bailing on us at the last minute. Is it important to go up with someone who's familiar with it, or will there be enough people around on the weekend that we can just follow/ask?

On weekends, there are quite a few rangers (USFS) who can advise/answer questions, etc. The hike up is a just a mass line of people (if weather's good and lots show up) - just follow the crowds. Bigger issue will be how the Sherburne Trail (to the base) is holding up and whether it is skiable part-way down (it was halfway as of last weekend, but all moguls/dirt). It's otherwise a long hike back down to the parking lot.
