Trying a new area: Mount Sunapee

Yesterday I did something different: I tried a new ski area.

New for me, that is: Mount Sunapee in Newbury, NH.

Incredible that I haven't been there before. My pass gives me lift privileges, and it's only an hour away. But I'm spoiled. Okemo is five minutes from my door, so it takes a bit to get me to make a drive.

Anyway, I met a friend there for the day and we had a fabulous time. It's a small area (230 skiable acres) with a summit of 2,743 ft (1,500 vertical feet), but a nice little mountain, nonetheless. The trail map lists 65(!?) trails, and 10 lifts, but given the crappy weather, only a fraction were open. Nonetheless, conditions, though spring-like, weren't bad at all. The mountain layout was easy to deal with. And the trails, though not demanding, were fun and of a decent length. Nice base lodge, too.

I wouldn't call it a "destination" resort. But for a day trip, I'll definitely be back.

Sunapee during the depths of winter (remember what that's like???) is beautiful. I skied there a lot three years ago, when I bought a pass. They have beautiful views across a valley with a lake, which becomes visible suddenly along some trails near the summit. They also do a luxury job of blowing snow (given winter temps) and grooming it. With two lodges at the bottom and a cafeteria with expresso bar at the summit, it can't be beat for some quick turns, especially during the week when the crowds are absent.

Skiing there got old for me after intense repetitive skiing day after day, but most people don't ski that way. I recommend it.

Oh, how funny. I ski at Sunapee frequently, living only an hour away. During the week when the snow is decent and it is uncrowded it is a great upper intermediate mtn, but it is a total zoo on the week-ends (like most places). I just wish they had more [not too tough]glades:o
