Travel Tips, News, and Conditions for Taos Ski Valley (TSV) 2026-27

@MissySki only once did I stay overnight in ABQ at an airport hotel. It did not help with adjusting to altitude at all. I had a headache and sleep issues the entire trip. I live at sea level about a block from the ocean. It was my first time to Taos. Ever since, I take prescription Diamox and go straight to TSV. Of course, Santa Fe is very cool and I can see why some like to stay there.

I haven’t booked flights yet, but also planning to fly in Friday. Are others going to stay in the Santa Fe area for the night? That’s my current thinking.

I tried staying in Santa Fe once on the day I flew into ABQ. Turned out not to be worth it. Same elevation as Taos.

These days I take the early morning flight that arrives by lunch time at ABQ. Then drive directly to Taos in the afternoon. Easy to make it there before dusk. Even if I end up waiting around to give a ride to someonw else, finishing the drive in the dark isn't that bad since there is no worry of any snow on the road into town. Of course, if someone is driving up to TSV then it's better to arrive before dark.

Just to be clear, I'm not intending to go to Santa Fe for altitude reasons... just liked it there last time and figured I'd visit again. But like I said, I'm interested in other ideas for things to do with the time as well... though I definitely know I want to go back to Ojo Caliente along the way. Are those going straight to TSV directly on Friday planning to ski an extra day or is there other fun stuff to do in the area that you like for a day off snow?

I wasn’t but now I might for my return trip and go to Ojo Caliente.

Santa Fe is a wonderful town to experience for a day or 2. Definitely worth it. Probably not that expensive if you don't try to stay in the center of town. But bring lots of money as the sightseeing and shopping opportunities are endless!!!

For people who would like to get a sense of why skiers of all levels like to do Taos Ski Weeks more than once, there was discussion after early February 2020. The week of the trip happened to be the Women's Ski Week that season (before the shift to late February).

This video about how to make it easier to deal with getting onto flight isn't specific to ABQ, but I learned about TSA Cares. For someone without TSA Pre-Check, could be useful at a busier airport. ABQ during the winter doesn't get long lines for TSA.
