Touching base (lodge, that is)

Which base lodge do you really like? And which do you hate? Why?

Post it here.

Locally like - Sir Sam's or Mount St. Saveur. Great sun decks come spring. And Saveur is well laid out and party central in the spring.
Local hate - Batawa Ski Hill - too small, too congested and the bathroom's smell
Anywhere in the world - well is not a base lodge, but base area - WB - Whistler-Blackcomb. Lots of outdoor patio's and places to just sit and people watch.

The base area at Beaver Creek is pretty sweet, escalators up to the slopes, the terrace at the Hyatt - fire pits, loungers with blankets, waiter service.

And ummm.. A-Basin. Nothing to see here... move along.

That's one place I'd like to go back to. Beaver Creek. We went in 1982. No lodge except in the middle of the mountain. Bubble at the base for lodge, rentals, lifts, but underground parking. Must be really different now. And I was sick with a cold and altitude sickness by that time of the week.

Beaver Creek is pretty luxurious.

I like Copper Mountain's base area at Center Village and I like the old fashioned feel of A-Basin, reminds me of the mountain I grew up at.

I hate Keystone's base set up. It takes forever to walk through to get to the lifts although they've announced that they are building some sort of gondola that will get you partway there. Oh, and the walk is treacherous, especially walking over the bridge.

I agree with Robyn. Like Copper's center village. BCs base is lux, but not a whole lot of variety for eating & drinking. I would rather be in Vail's village for variety.

As far as Abasin, very basic. Homey bar. What?? Nothing to see?? You haven't seen anything until you have been to a beach party there! It is one of the funnest tailgating ski areas anywhere!

Saw this thread over at Alpine Zone. Someone posted pics of base lodge at Snow Basin. WOW!

Up in Maine, I give the award to Saddleback - it's new, has a terrific deck, homey fireplace, nice balcony area. Classy.

For lodges my favorite is Yellowstone Club's (you guys knew I was going to say that!). Amazing food, ground floor bathrooms (a plus with kids in tow!), all the necessities right by the doors to stock your pockets (hand warmers, tissues, protein bars, sunscreen..etc), comfy slippers, making s'mores around the fire pits...etc

Beaver Creek would probably be my second fav.

What's a base lodge?

(Couldn't help saying that....)

I prefer mid-mountain lodges myself, away from the hustle and bustle, but I still like a lunch with good food. Most mid-mountain lodges are pretty yech. Any recommended mid-mountain lodges? I think I remember liking one at Snowmass, but that was ages ago. I certainly can't think of any terrific summit or mid-mountain lodges in this state.

I do eat at the top of the mountain here at Big Mountain, but it's no great shakes, just the fastest way to get 'er done.

Mid-mountain bases I like Ten-mile at Breckenridge, Solitude at Copper (cause it has entry level bathrooms, a huge plus when coaching) and Two Elk at Vail.
