Toddler boot issues

My three year old is having boot issues. I guess boots are hard no matter what our age! She has high arches and apparently very large calves, so she's in boots that are two sizes bigger than the length of her foot to accommodate her calves. These are okay for her (though big overall) for now, but they cause her to walk around like a penguin with her toes turned out a lot both in the house and while on the flats. She does ski straight when she picks up speed. She's fine in shoes and while bike riding, so it's just the ski boots. Has anyone else had this issue? We are renting so we'll go back to the ski shop again and see what they can do.

Is she walking "heel-toe" and bending her knee? Show her how Mommy walks and see what happens. Kids are still uncoordinated at that age.

What sort of boots does she have? There are many work-arounds for a large calf in adult boots, one of which might work for toddler boots

Check out the Fischer One boots. My 2 year old has them (though he can’t really ski yet…). They have a big Velcro strap and an outer layer that zips up (but you can leave it unzipped). The Velcro strap is a lot more adjustable and forgiving than plastic buckles.

Yes, I've tried that! And she wasn't walking this way in the smaller boots that "hurt" her feet so much she wouldn't ski.

She's in kids boots, 18.5 mondo. I'll ask if they have others! We are renting the boots

Thanks! I'll ask about those. I've seen them. I hope I don't have to buy them :-(

One thing you could try is go back to the smaller boot, but put in a heel lift. That tends to get the calf higher and pull the foot back from the toe area. Most boot shops will probably do it for kids for free.

My kids used hand me down boots when they were younger, so they were big too. But it really didn't matter because they were mainly just going straight or shifting their weight from one side to the other.

Walking is probably the problem with huge boots!

I took the liners out, and what's happening is both sides of the tongue dig sharply into her leg. The tongue doesn't cup her leg at all, her leg is too big for that. And the tongue is very hard.

I'm renting them so they are going to try all the other brands and see if we can find a match. She still talks about how skiing hurt her, so it's a big problem! We haven't gotten up lately, will try again soon!
