Question: To Buy or Not To Buy?

Hi!

Found what looks like a great buy on some rental type skis -- K2 Lotta Luvs, from the '06-7 season. The price is outstanding at $299, and the bottoms look great. There were two pair, and the one wasn't nearly as nice on the bottom. The tops and bindings looked about the same. Play it Again Sports is selling these, and they came from a ski area somewhere around us. The dude in the store said I could bring them back if I had them checked out by someone in a real ski shop, but I got the impression he'd say anything to move some skis out the door. I'm not sure I believed him...

I don't know what to call it, but you know the "hollow" between them when the bottoms are together? I'm not certain there's enough, or if they're too flattened out from use. Should they be about the same as my True Luvs? (from '04 or '05, used 50-75 times, and I have been a heavy skier) I'm also concerned about top damage. The "clear coat" is pretty scratched up around and on the bindings, and the tips and tails look like this:

I know how much and what kind of use mine have had, and they look a whole lot better than this, though as I said above, the bottoms - important part - look very good.

Thanks for any input on these before I go back to buy them if they're still there when I go back...

Kano,

I'm sure you would LOVE a pair of LottaLuvs - I did and we've both skied on the same generation of True Luvs! However I'd be wary of these skis. While $299 sounds like a good price for a pair of Lottas given the condition of the skis I'd shy away. I know that earlier this year I saw NEW lottas on end-of-season clearance for either $400 or $450. A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of used demos at a ski shop, including several pairs of Burnin Luvs for a very good price and all were in better shape than the pictures you've posted. I'd also suspect a ski shop would stand behind their sales more than a Play It Again Sports (if they're anything like the one near me!).

If you can negotiate a considerably cheaper price, I'd take them. but if you're spending money on a midfat ski, you can get brand new skis for a little bit more.
That's too much for that ski in that condition.

The eos is a possible ski in that quiver category.

The scratches in the top sheet aren't anything to be concerned about. I also wouldn't worry too much about the camber of the skis (the space between them when put bottom to bottom) as many of the fatter skis are made with anything from "less" camber to negative camber. The chips, in general, are no big deal, but I'd be a little concerned about possible delamination occurring from the big chip on the tip. Your main concern should be the bottoms and the bindings.

I've never had any issue taking something back to Play It Again as long as I had the receipt. See if you can get them to lower the price some, maybe and have them checked out at a reputable shop.

I'd look elsewhere too. There are better deals out there on better stuff. The chip on the tip is not good. That is going to cause delamination for sure down the road.
