Thoughts on Sugarloaf/Boyne banning man for negative posts on interwebs?

This is definitely subjectively written, but I haven't found anything that isn't and this gives the story and links to the post in question. If someone has an objective version of the story, please link us

Thoughts?

Steve Kircher of Boyne posted at AlpineZone yesterday, I thought it was a well written piece on the issue.

Boyne can do what it wants, basically. No constitutional issues (I don't think). Maybe I just don't think it's worth the attention it's received - so many other things going on in the world.

it's really not worthy of all the attention it has received...yet on the other hand it's scary to think of what someone can try to do because of something you posted on the internet.

I spent waaaaay too much time last night reading all the threads involved in the story. The guy who was tossed is known for stirring the pot and admits he crossed the line with this one. Boyne over-reacted to the situation and eventually admitted to doing so. Both sides have met, kissed and made up. All is well at Sugarloaf.

Unless of course you're the parents of the girl that died :(

There is a lot to this story that we'll never know. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, People who post on message boards need to think before they hit submit.
The old saying "Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." is not so true, eh?

It seems at this point that even if the guy deserved to get banned - the negative publicity that has come out of the whole thing makes it seem like the resort would have been better off ignoring it - no matter what was being said. If it was still just on whatever the little message board it started on - none of us would be talking about it.

And it's also sad that the real tragedy of the girl's death seems like it is being overlooked because of some silly drama going on on the sidelines.

This is the real tragedy. Thanks for the reminder.

Both SnowHot and altagirl are correct in the following respects:
1. There is a lot more to this story that many do not know; and,
2. The negative publicity has not been helpful to the resort.

Bearing this in mind (it’s also my home mountain), it is correct that, as far as I've heard, the 2 parties have met and begun to resolve the issues.

The original story that appeared in the news about the young h.s. woman’s tragic accident was quoted on a forum, to which “the accused” made a comment pertaining to the resort’s comment about “conditions not at fault.” It turns out that, in fact, this is how the questions were asked and thus the story reported by the reporter. Unfortunate wording all around. And apparently nowhere near the first time that this particular individual who made the online comments has had clashes with management.

TGR had an even bigger reaction to it, asking any/all to boycott all Boyne resorts. Some actually canceled pending reservations.

All knee-jerk responses by all involved were hasty. The person who made the forum comments retracted and apologized when rebuffed by other forum members not long after the intitial comments were made.

I do not know the final outcome of this except that the unfortunate misunderstanding/poor communication are being resolved.

And I’m reminded of the text of a very old AT&T print ad:
“Talk to each other.
Communication is the beginning of understanding.”

Post script: in NO WAY did this recent firestorm/controversy supercede or in any way minimize the depth of the tragedy that took place at that mountain. This is another misconception: that because of the ensuing controversy, people have forgotten the precipitating event. NOT TRUE. If I wasn't there 3x/wk, I wouldn't know, but I am. And the pall it has cast is deep. We are all heartsick about it.

I didn't mean for people on location or who knew her. I just meant the nationwide uproar on various bulletin boards (TGR, etc.) is all about this who said what controversy with very little focus on the event that precipitated it. Which doesn't seem right.
