Those Silly Steroid Boys...

Ok. I was disappointe to hear about the participation of a couple of current and former Rockies players being named in the 409 page report about Baseball Steroid use. :nono:

What do you guys think? Should Roger Clemens, etc. lose their records and/or place in baseball history?:noidea:

I'm leaning towards yes, but how the heck do they do that when there ARE SO MANY!!!!????

I think the Babe, etc. are rolling over in their graves! :yell:

This is so sad. I just shake my head. Beyond the health issues presented, the cultural issues & implications, it is just sad. My only personal actual real life perspectives on anabolic steroids come from dealing with the variety of criminal behavior & actions the use & sales of anabolics create. Tragedy often strikes not only those that use them, but the victims of the behavior they create. Anabolics have their place for very few medical conditions when judiciously used by a qualified physician for those conditions. And the effects can be monitored & appropriate management taken.

Any other use is criminal. The fact that athletes of any age or sport feel the need to take them is indicative of the multitude of problems with competitive & professional sports & the high dollars involved all around. I remember the days when America et al called foul with athletes from the USSR in the Olympics for suspected steroid use. It wasn't ok then & it's not ok now. This problem has dropped clear down to the level of teenage high school students. If public figures in competitive sports get away with this use, it makes it ok in the eyes of our youth. It is not.

I don't think it matters how many. They are all examples of what to do or not to do. You start by prosecuting all that are within statute. As for their records, it needs to be determined who did or did not illegally take them during what time frames & jerk their records & awards for those time frames if that fits within the rules/regs. If they don't have stated consequences to handle it now, then they need to create them for now & future.

Well Stated!

I don't think records will be or should be taken away. I think they will stay on the record books but with the proverbial asterisk. Like it or not, they happened, and steroids or no, it took talent to get there. However, the general sports world will not acclaim these tainted records, which I believe is enough of a punishment. Baseball fans everywhere (except possibly San Francisco) hold Hank Aaron in higher regard than Barry Bonds. Bonds and McGwire will never be held in as high esteem as Ruth and Aaron.

Pro sports, in the end, are for the fans. Prestige and acheivement for a pro sports player comes from performing well and being acclaimed by the fans. (yes they're doing it for money too, but they wouldn't draw that money if they didn't draw the fans). So numbers on a book will mean nothing if the fans don't attach any heroic meaning to them.

The asterisk on Maris's record has lasted to this day. The asterisks for Clemens, Bonds, McGwire et al, will last too. Even if the records were taken off the books, everyone would still know that they happened. The best thing for baseball right now is to focus on moving forward and not spend too much time wallowing in acrimony.

Has anyone heard the rumor that Guv Schwarzenegger's health issues (heart, broken femur from "non"-skiing - he was apparently just standing around when the fracture happened - ??) are traceable back to his steroid-consuming days as a body-builder? Both are long-term side effects of steroid use, apparently. Seems like the health risks far outweigh the record/honor being stripped....

Geez, I feel a bit behind the times. He's our gov & I was in his office last month. Was completely unaware of the heart issue or how his femur broke. I assumed it was a testosterone charged ski run down the hill & a big whoops! that caused the accident. Shame on me assuming. If I'd heard those rumors, being the Miss foot in mouth I am, I would have asked.
Dunno about his prior use of steriods. But it is never good to use them outside of a bona fide medical condition & even then they need to be the best drug of choice for the condition. They still have multitudes of side effects.

But, giving him the benefit of doubt, an adrenaline filled lifestyle or living/working on the edge for extended periods can cause a lot of destruction to the heart & bones by natural responses from our bodies. So there could be some natural destruction happening there as well as the cigar smoking which compounds all the effects as well as confunds our bodies abilities to compensate or repair.
