Things I LOVE to see skiing

We have the "Dumb Ideas" thread, so I thought I'd post something positive! Here are a few things I love to see/hear when skiing:

A group of old ladies skiing

People smiling when they walk into the lunch room

Having a young person say "Nice" as I ski past him (happened twice!)

Dogs in the parking lot at Mary Jane at the end of the day

A group of little rippers coming down the hill well (not a newbie class, but a group of 7 or 8 year old kids who ski better than me!)

On old guy telemarking with style and grace I yearn to someday achieve

What makes you smile?

Oh my, you're a tough act to follow, but here it goes:

I love to see teens skiing with their parents because they aren't too cool to be seen with them.

I love to see a dad in the base lodge with a tiny one while Mom takes her turns on the slopes.

I love to overhear my husband tell his friends "Tricia and I are lucky to have each other to ski with"
(you know he would never say it to me, nor to his friends if he knew I could hear)

I saw a young family heading out to go home yesterday aft. Mom, Dad, about 3 year old boy, 4+ year old sister, both gorgeous blonds, darling clothes, just the cutest family I'd seen all day. I smiled from ear to ear :D - what a nice sight.

Mine's like yours, SnowHot! I wouldn't hear it directly either, nor would I hear it if he knew I could, but yours is right: we're lucky to have each other to ski with!

Something I like to see -- People the size of a house out skiing! I've been there, and it ain't easy to drag a house-sized body out, bundled up to nearly double its size...

I honestly saw this yesterday when I was getting ready.
A man feeding a small baby a bottle, as he said to his wife, who was walking out of the lodge, "I'll be out as soon as I'm done feeding her."
Later I saw him out on the hill (street boots not ski boots)with the baby in a kangapack, with camera in hand, taking pictures of his wife. The smile on her face was huge!

-a mom/dad and little kid skiing down the slopes together
-yep, those older gents cruisin' the bumps with style and grace
-the kickass patrol lady at Jay with the helmet sticker that said, 'TRUST ME I'm a girl' !!!
-the pictures in my inbox of The Boy's little niece on skis for the first time, having a blast on her sticks!
-guys with ice stuck in their beards <3
-laughing joyfully (and inspiring laughter in others passing by) by wiping out into a huge pillow of fresh snow.... WHEEEEEE!

and last but not least, this picture!!!

This one hit me particularly this weekend since the holidays are over...

I love seeing the locals take the mountain back after New Years. It may not be as apparent at big resorts like Deer Valley and Vail since tourist season pretty much never stops, but at little Solitude you can just tell when the big rushes are over. It was so cool to see all the locals stepping it up this weekend and just ripping. Running into friends, seeing everyone get the big sticks out, and skiing until the lifts close. Love it.

I like:

Authenticity - straight skis, old boots, ancient clothes, expert skiing.

Inspiration - senior citizens skiing.

Friendliness - strangers stopping to help someone who has fallen.

Budget Minded Newbie - sports team jacket, street pants, rental skis, clumsy, unsure, maybe first timer. Welcome! Welcome to skiing!

The kids I coach, finally getting it. I was getting very frustrated with my season thus far between frigid days and having some skiers that just aren't as motivated as the ones I had last year. On Saturday I saw all 6 that were present make improvements by leaps and bounds. It was absolutely incredible and satisfying. The best was a little girl who I've known since last year when I had her older brother who has been whiny all season and basically refused to ski with me last week totally change her tune. Not only was she skiing much better but she was excited to show me. Repeatedly I heard "Robyn, watch my french fry turns, watch". I needed a day like that.

I love seeing older couples still out cruising the slopes together.

I love seeing my racers from previous years rip down a course.

I love seeing parents out encouraging their kids and having fun while doing it.

1. I loved skiing last winter with Mrs. Eaves. She's 80+ years old and was on the CSIA convention course. She is my inspiration.
2. Along with that is the "ole fools club" at Owls Head. One was my neighbour. A bunch of 80+ guys that just love to ski and party.
3. Along with tradygirl, seeing the locals back on the mountain after the holidays. Met most our friends New Years Day - "You been here all week? Yeah - where you been??"
4. The smiles on the kids faces when they make it down the bunny hill the first time without falling.
5. Laughing at myself when I finally hit the snow this year. Took about 12 days before I lost my footing. Damn bumps!!

I love to see other die hard chicks ripping it up out there.

I love when my sweetie tells his friends that I rip and that he told his Dad "she's always with me every step of the way"

Little rippers.

Big tumbles under the lifts that end when the person picks their head up & laughs.

-the lady who called out "oh thank you" after I yelled "on the right!" as I passed her in a narrow chute

-the patroller at Timberline who chewed out the out-of-control snowboarder who crashed and burned, skidding to a stop less than an inch away from where I was standing off to the side near the bottom of a lift.

-the avalanche rescue dogs- when not searching for a victim, of course!

Oh boy, I think I'm getting close to qualifying for this category.......:D

So glad to hear your kids are breaking through! Sounds like the super-cold snap was hurting everyone out there.

Love the dog on snowmobile shot!
I love the day that the little kid just "gets it." They probably don't know how or why, but they just KNOW it. And they are OFF. Nothing better for a instructor of kids than to see that breakthrough. Or a parent! It's a great, memorable day. Love to see anyone getting it, you just know by the look on their face whether they are going to be hooked for life. But the kids---well, I'm a softie

Agree with most of the ones that have come up so far.

I also love seeing dads struggle to catch up with their little ripper daughters, hardcore chicks attempting to be patient with their not so hardcore boyfriends, instructors who are visibly inspired by helping their students toward breakthroughs, the combination of pigtails and a speed suit, anyone going down the bunny hill over and over for hours with a grin on their face, the list goes on and on.

I want to know more about that dog, too.
Actually, one of the things I love to see is an avalanche dog riding up the lift with his/her trainer. They're awfully cute when they're doing their drills, too.
Another thing I love to see is really, really strong women skiers, especially when they're over 40!

Nope, don't know the dog, but I love the shot! We were at A-Basin last year and we passed the snowmobile just sitting there. Doggie was just chilling sitting on it with the happiest most expectant look on his face. His owner/handler wasn't anywhere in sight. I just imagined him going 'Ride, ride, we go for ride now??'

edited to add, in the shot he's not grinning, but i'm pretty sure he just knew i was taking a picture of him and got camera shy!
